I think that's an Old Wives Tale, and if not the law is unenforceable. Counterfeiters own cameras, too, and the clerk at my local 7-11 would have to be pretty stupid to cash this picture.

There must be an interesting story attached to that house. I can envision an old man sitting on the front porch with a shotgun, daring the bulldozers to come closer......

Very nice colors and composition. But it seems to be tilted to the left a little.

Taken from the deck of a cruise ship on Alaska's Inside Passage. I missed my dinner for this shot, but still managed to gain 10 pounds on the trip.

Still scanning through my old Kodachromes. Color is faded, but still looks OK in B&W.

I think you're right about the B&W version.

Keon,

The majority of the blurring was due to the fact it was snowing heavily, plus the train was stirring up clouds of snow on its own. As I remember, I found the cleanest window I could, then panned the passing scenery to minimize blurring.

Thanks, everybody. This is the first time I've been out with the little P&S Olympus. Bought it as a backup. Damn, it's got a pretty good lens!

I wish it were sharper, too.. but sharpness can be a problem with a 37 year-old slide. Ah, well.

Yeah, it's a little soft. That's because it's a pretty extensive crop, only about 25% of the original, and the iso 400 film didn't help. Scanned at 2400dpi which is the best my scanner will do. I intend to go back and do the cropping with the camera next time. It's only a mile away from my house, so if I can get back before the bulldozers take it down I might be able to improve on the shot.

I know the dark skin is difficult to get right, but a fill flash would have helped. Also, the boy on the right needs to be either in the frame or cropped out.

Nice composition, Mary. I love the expression in the dog's eyes. The tennis ball looks like it's covered with used crankcase oil, though. The straight B&W is the best of the two, IMO.

Renee,

Thanks for your comments re the signs. As to the political statements, everyone please notice that the subject is Journalism. I don't think I stated what my political views were until prodded. At any rate, as you said this is a photo critique forum. Political statements and soapboxes, whether pro or con, don't belong here.

Neil and Marilla,

Points taken and thanks. Here are my thoughts. This is the full frame, with no cropping. I did compose the picture rather carefully at the time, and intentionally included the pot-bellied man on the left, as well as the flag in the background and the "Evil Triumphs" sign. I wanted to get as much of the flavor of the event as possible. As to the women's signs being cut off, My consideration was that It'd be pretty difficult not go guess their theme, and if I'd included the full signs a lot of the detail in the women's faces would have been lost and the two women would have been diminished as the subject.. the signs would have taken over from them. I was taking a picture of the women and the atmosphere surrounding them. The signs they were displaying, IMO, were secondary and just added atmosphere.

Well, actually I don't still use the Retinette. It finally died back in 1968. This picture was taken in 1965. As to the focus, I was young, had never heard of hyperfocus, and was out with my fellow GI's for a day on the river. I can't even remember taking this particular photo, much less the particulars.
