Ah! In this case the distortion seems expressive to me of the isolation and anonymity of civic life.

Someone my age thinks automatically of the movie "2001" and of the original album cover for The who's "Tommy." The distortion affects the already sci-fi aspect of the building's architecture.

A photo which my having glimpsed the title gives a whole new range of meanings, as in "cast aside," "shoved aside." Apart from those titular implucations, another strong and lovely portrait by Mister Caldwell.

Mister Caldwell frequently uses the ploy of placing an image far to one side to give energy. The images seems to be thrust there with terrific force. This figure reminds me of saints standing at the foot of the cross in Renaissance pantings, indicating with one hand the crucified Christ.

I like the counterpoint between the title (to me, a shrug is a simple reflex) and the tension of the muscles, the tension of the shorts acrosss the groin, and the tension of the whole way the model holds his weight in a half squat. The result is some great photographic and erotic energy.
