Hi Vidya,
I have been a Canon user and have little idea about Nikon lenses available.

But as a thumb rule I would choose a zoom lens that has a fixed f/number and smaller the number the better it is as they are fast lenses and sharp. I had a Canon zoom with f/4 as fixed aperture value, it works fine in low light levels. These lenses are surely costly than those having variable aperture value.

You are still using films, but when you purchase a lens please look for its compatibility with Nikon digital single lens cameras, as lenses are not bought every now and then. This will save you on any future expenses if you ever decide to go in for a DSLR camera.

Have a look at Tokina, Tamron, Sigma and Vivitar lenses for your Nikon F55 as these companies are into lens manufacturing. They supply lenses to various popular brands with the brands name on it. Like Nikon may not be manufacturing their own lenses but would be getting them manufactured by anyone of these companies.

Hope this helps you, please contact for any clarifications if I have not been able to put it across to properly.
Wish you a great New Year with lots of great shots to show around to share with us all.
Regards
Inder

There was a lot of distraction since this could be shot from across a busy road. I personally did not like the distractions. Thanks for your feedback, appreciate it very much. regards

Thank you Mr. Debarshi Dasgupta for your comments. Nothing to beat a macro lens coz of its high end production value with a coating that we find on lenses. To be honest I have rarely used a Macro lens for its price tag unless it was in combination with a zoom lens. I have used a set of closeup lenses/filters all through my years of photography. If you can hold of some good imported ones, like B+W, nothing like it, but you could also buy ones made in India. One company is SONIA from Delhi. A set of four lenses (+1,2,4 and 10 diopters) cost about Rs. 300/-. With budget contraints these will doing a great job for you. Regards
