Fantastic. I usually despise borders on digital shots, but the one you use here works really well.

Nice shot. Funny how such a common subject can look so different from various perspectives. I have a shot of the same ferris wheel here:

I like it, but I can't tell what that lumpy mass is in the lower right portion, and that bugs me.

For the sake of argument, other than a technical reproduction, what's the value in photographing somebody else's art? You're only reproducing what somebody else has created. It's like recording the symphony and then telling people you're a musician.

I think the crop needs to show a bit more of her left eye. The sliver of iris is a bit disconcerting as is.

Nice work & well executed. The empty candle-holder and madonna are interesting details, and beg for the viewer to construct a narrative interpretation.

I agree with Roderick - there's no drama. It's just a model holding a knife. Ideas:

1) She's a dancer right? There could be some motion.
2) A setting other than studio-white background .
3) A more unique pose, maybe some expression in her face.
4) Anything to bring tension into the scene.

Technically, it's not a bad photograph. Compositionally, the harp is a bit odd and it took me a moment to realize what it was, and the strings are causing some weird banding. Perhaps a subtle light source directed on the strings would help this. When it it comes down to it, it is pretty comical.

Her face looks a bit "stretched", I'm wondering if you probably used too short of a lens length. would be better to user a longer lens and step back away from her more.

the lines don't actually follow the contours of her face, so it doesn't appear that they are actual shadows falling on her. i'm not sure if that was the intent or not, so it isn't criticism, just an observation. nice portrait though.

lighting is good, agree w/ richard on backlighting (or different color background?)

would also recommend a softening filter

to be extra picky: bright red shirt + red hair w/ blond streaks = not so good, the red hair goes dead and the blond streaks start to go green (especially towards the bottom where they're directly against the red shirt). a more neutral color shirt would solve this. if you have time to experiment, a slightly green shirt might be nice. (i'm not how this might affect skin tones though)

cheers, and post more.

I think you're trying to say so much in one photograph, that nothing in particular is being communicated clearly. Even with your explanation, the combination of elements in the composition is just confusing. It seems to me that each figure could be a photograph unto themselves. Grouped together (especially w/ odd details such as the christmas lights & the tambourine), it looks like the photograph was just taken for the sake of being weird. The only visual metaphor that's working is the body, blood & money, and even then, it's a bit cliché. I would suggest focusing on just one of the issues you mentioned in your explanation - and with your technical abilities, I'm sure you could make a wonderful photo.

really wonderful shot. i wish her necklace was a bit darker and thus a more prominent element of the composition. nice use of DoF.
