There is something about the play of light and shadow in the soft image that yields both innocent and sinister reactions. Innocence in the blurry softness and the slight smile of the subject; sinister in the extremely dark shadow across the eye, and the profile composition reminiscent of a police mug shot. The lack of any highlight detail in the center of the image draws the eye to the top and bottom of the frame, where it is met by shadow and smile--an interesting ambivalence. Dan
