I absolute love it! Take a look at my version... I kinda darkened the green and blue sides so that they are not so distracting, "pinked" little Lily there and also darkened her eyes. Just a thought though! :-)
Keep up the good work Katharine!

Excellent composed very beautiful abstract animal image. The upper right corner of the photo is a little distracting because of the soft spot on the zebra's forehead and the lighter spots. This part gould be easely cloned out in PS and give it a more natural pale grey tone so the attention of the viewers eye will be totaly on the wonderful lines and details of the zebra's head....Best regards Harry

Hi Catherine! i'm not sure about this one. i love the graphic black and white feel of it..i love your title, composition and i love the roughness, even to the dusty grittiness in the top left. But i wish i could see a l-i-t-t-l-e glint of light in his eye and that the stripes in the bottom right foreground weren't blown out.

i wanted to say thanks for your comment on my shot "Storm Warnings", that storm was so strong i had to eat in the restaurant i was headed to without light or even a stove. It knocked the airport right out of commission till the next morning. You really summed up the mood of the scene, the danger and the fascination. This is the ambience of winter storms in the tropics..very very exciting and life affirming!

I like the image but like you said, it is the scan that is setting this one off. It appears you're trying to force a larger image from a smaller image. The image itself appears just fine in a smaller scale, which I hope you don't mind but I've added here. Nice capture!

No - the cropping is great. The focus is on everyone's similar expression and direction they are looking - not WHAT they are looking at. Fun!

I can't really say it's clear that the lion is standing, because all I can recognize is the head and neck and a hint of the paw. Judging only by the photo, it could also be that the person is crouching. But does it matter? In my view, the strong point of this capture is that they are eye to eye; regardless of whether that contact is taking place two feet above ground or five feet.

Thanks for your input, Matej.
Yes, I wish the human face hadn't been swallowed in shadow (it was dark in the lion house!--and no flash) I hope it is clear that the lion is standing on her hind legs with her paw on the wire. (it occured to me later that it could look like she was just in a raised cage instead)
If I can find where I put the negative, I'll try to print a bigger version. Thanks for the suggestion!

Thanks for the comment, Mike. Yes, she has loved freezing her butt off in Maine waters since she was doused by a wave there when she was 4 months old and laughed & laughed!
I suppose I had thought the picture showed the smaller child's wistful curiosity about the girl as she goes further & further into the sea. Maybe I'm getting a little too metaphoric.
Does this work better? The kid was great- I wish he were mine.

Good shot. I'd like to suggest a crop - turn it into a portrait of just the kid on the right, and bring the top down a bit so that only water appears. The other person isn't doing anything interesting (other than freezing her butt off in those wonderfully cold Maine waters).

I for one find it interesting. The bluriness is OK because it adds a sense of motion and tension. I just wish the person's face were clear, to better show that eye contact between the lion and the person. It would also be nice if you uploaded a bigger version so that the photo could be enjoyed properly.

I like the look, I like the move, I like the lighting and the B&W effect... Very impressive :-)
The only thing I would change is omitting the small black part at the top left corner because it's a little bit distracting for the eye!

Hi Katharine:

For me, it's your capture of Madeline's quizzical, hesitant expression that makes this an outstanding image. The graininess works well because it communiticates the essence of emotion without any distracting detail. --Best, Jim

So sweet! I think it's special enough, because the expression of the dog is gorgeous! For me it works fine with the center placement, I only wish the background was either a bit "cleaner" (or empty) or not so sharp. But still, it's a lovely shot of cute dog!

The roughness described by Terry is part of its charm. The eye redefines it as an individual rather than just existing as many stripes.

It's that peak moment, and that connection established by the eye contact makes it work.

Thank you all for your kind comments!
I experimented with changing the contrast, as Jose suggested. In order to do that, I had to isolate the bright spots and "add noise." I'm not sure about it now- can you see the difference? Opinions welcomed.
