I believe this building is on native reserve land, just south of Canmore. Although you don't appreciate it in this photo, the tremendous backdrop is witness to the abject poverty of clashing cultures. I don't really like the building either. But a foreground element offers context that some of my other photos from the day were lacking.

Spectacular mountains, given scale by the building in the foreground. (I would prefer something of a more traditional building, though I'm not sure what building styles might exist in the region...)

Very nice Dave - If you golf like I do, I'm much more likely to get a good shot carrying a camera around the course than my clubs! Regardless, a very nice capture of this guy - Great detail and the "challenges" to get the POV were worth it!
Well done!

Oh, thankyou, Dave. It has been a surprise to me that I don't use my long glass very often. Mainly it's the inconvenience of dragging big lenses around. This shot was with a medium telephoto at about 50 mm, on the golf course where the marmots are tame. The worst of it was having to lie in marmot dung to get the shot with distant sky. The golfing was forgettable, but I got one shot worth remembering.

Thankyou, Kim. I haven't been here for a while, and didn't notice your comments. Indeed, what limited my interest in replacing color was inexperience with photoshop, and the fact that my previous attempts looked fake because of spill onto adjacent areas. This effort is a lot better than I have had in the past, and I'll try using it one day. Cheers.

Hi Dave!
I tried playing with it photoshop... I used the REPLACE COLOUR tool and made the creams blue. Then I took the history brush tool and ran it over the feathers again, to bring back the colour. I'm trying to learn a little more about photoshop, and to use what I learn so I don't forget it.

Hope you don't mind my messing around!

Thank you, Kim. I don't like the background either. It is actually better in the original, but the shot was underexposed so I had to boost exposure to get accurate detail in the subject. The bird was in the shade so I also intentionally overexposed since I knew my lightmeter would try to make the subject too dark. I did try to move a little but I knew he would be spooked as I moved around.

I admire those guys who can drop in a better background, as whenever I try that it looks fake because of the tricky edges.

Such sharpness and detail! It's too bad about the faded yellow background... it makes this amazing capture not stand out as much as it should. Once opened to full size its' very impressive.
Next time there is a blue sky you should go Merlin hunting again!

Dave, I love this one. The colours are so vivid, and the scene so stark. It's a very interesting contrast, and you really did catch the magical light.
I've never been to Vulcan, but after seeing this, I think I should!
I can't believe how sharp the roof of the house is... it stands out so well against the sky. Truly a breathtaking image.

This has such a dramatic feel to it (except for those goofy golden grins!hahahaha) The shadows on your face are lit wonderfully and nothing seems too hot or too dark. I love the sky although it seems maybe just a touch too black and white.
