Hi Nathan, the DOF works really well here, but I think the portrait of the coach could be improved upon by showing a bit more of his neck, cutting off his chin looks a bit forced - to me. The three layers (including the old guy in the back on the left and the balanced distance between them rocks, though. Good shot, just wish there would've been a bit more space in the lower part of the image.

Cheers,

Hugo

hi thanks some of these photos are set up for news print when i add them so i can not go all the way black because it gos TOO black in the paper when it gets printed i could go back to my RAW files but i do not have as much time as i like you might also see where some color photos are a bit off color it just me copsating for the news press i do have to send them in to be toned but i do try to get it close as i can my self

Nice shot, but the contrast seems a little flat, as there is no full black in your shot.

Meant to add...

Too much of a "neatimage" or plastic feel to me, just the style aspect. This is just a personal taste choice...

This needs much more...

Very ordinary to me... soft DOF yes, but nothing compelling...

Some of your others are interesting. ; )

Pleasing visual of an interesting portrait. I like the choice of colours that all blend together just fine. Nice details in the lips and eye lashes...Brian

Nathan,

You have a very interesting portfolio...a wide range of subject...This photo caught my eye...it was mainly the colors, texture, framing and lighting...over all this is a really good portrait that shows how discordinate colors can work for a photo...Great job!

I like the softness, would like to see more forehead and less black on the bottom.

Hi Nathan... Actually when doing portraiture, there is a great deal of personal taste. IMHO, I believe if you take this shot of your sister, crop to the bottom of her hair @~, you remove the distraction of her designed shirt, and place the emphasis on her face/eyes. Additionally, I might consider desaturating into a B&W world. Some photos really pop when visualized B&W. Also, next time try stopping down the aperture a bit to kill the background, and compress a bit more with @~ 135mm lens or equvalent digital...Obviously, this is just my Opinion. Nice work though, keep it up!

cheers,

Bill

hi thanks it would surprise you that before i started photoing people in high school i ust to win photo captions with landscapes and photos like this that is how i learned how to shoot. i learned to shoot with my old STX1 Fugey 50mm (it was a lot like my K1000) lol then i been looking at GREAT work like yours i do not think i will ever be as good a you but i try lol i have some more from this shoot i not put up yet it is from a easement that i did for that paper i am working for it was a flower show and the flower arrangement was 8in wide by 8in tall all the work was dun in camera ie ... it was a news photo so i could not manipulate it i cropped a bit though i shot some with a f4 70-300 D sigma with a micro setting and my f3.3 35-70 nondigital no micro setting lences i can not remember which photo i used witch lense on lol i was shooting on the RAW setting 200 asa @1250 (or so) f4 or f3.3 the show was an inside one and the lighting was crappy so i asked if i could move the flowers outside in to the sun where the flowers poped this photo or the other close up shot did not run the editor chose a nether photo that was not any wher as good as these it was of a photo of the winner standing but her winning entry in side where it was not a good lighting at all ie over head fresnts and dimly light but i not up set it is not my call if they wont to pay for the worst photo that is there biness lol

Nathan, I had to rub my eyes twice and look again at the name under the photograph to make sure this was your image! I always recognize your photographs in a heartbeat, especially your portraits. This flower image is cheery and pretty, but I never would have guessed it was yours!

I like the control you showed on the focus/blur. Was this done in the camera or in PS?

A fun diversion for you, Nathan!

This is different from the portraits you usually post! I like the nearly abstract form.

The background gradient really makes this image pop. Nicely seen, Nathan.

lol true....... this is a really nice shoot you captured Nathan I like the 3/4 pose and the postion of the arms and hands. It contrast nicely with the back ground. Nice detail and directing.
