Love the composition and the subject but needs more light. Maybe even a reflector would worked, who knows how patient his subject was :)

Gordon, This could be much better presented. The colors are flat (lacking in contrast). May I suggest that if you have an editor, that you make some adjustment with the levels command.
Here is how I would have presented this image but it could be better with more time spent on it.

Gordon, The image is a bit small and is also flat,( lacking in contrast).
If you have an editor, try adjusting with the level and curve commands.
White should always appear white such as in the eye's, teeth (depends on individual :-))

Gordon, this image requires some adjustment in an editor (if you have one).
The photo needs more contrast, to do this it is adjusted with the levels command first, then some adjustment with the curve command.
Here is your image after such adjustment, hope you like it.

Gordon, it is not sufficient to just remove hue & saturation. You need to adjust with the levels and curve commands if you want to present reasonable quality images and also get good quality prints.

I took the liberty of making the above mentioned adjustments and here is the result.

Good capture Gordon. Nicely composed.
Being a Critique Me image I will have to say the light is not working for you on this shot. Possibly at a different time day the light would be on this side of the cactus, if you were close enough it may have been possible to use a fill flash.
I did a quick light, colour and sharpening adjustment in PS Elements 5. What do you think? Trying to fix it after the fact is never as good as getting it right in the camera.
All the best,
Joe

Thanks for the kind comments Amy. I just retired and I'm hoping to use this time to study and advance my photography skills with my new Nikon D200, as I am planning on traveling throughout the USA for the next 6 months or so.

Gordon, this is a very nice portrait. I like to see the frame filled in this manner.
The exposure was a little out, but, if you have photoshop you could make a big improvement. If you adjust the levels to 0/1.00/136 and then adjust the curves to 110/150 and then adjust with "Neat Image" just to soften it a little you would finish up with something like this :-

For me a little too dark, a little reflected light or fill in flash on the face would have given a little more colour and detail to her eyes.

Gordon, this is a reasonable portrait but.. it is a little flat and needs some work to give it a lift.
Here is my suggestion which I did by adusting with the curve command in photoshop.
