Mondo!
The background looks to have the perfect DOF. The lighting does look a bit harsh.. I can't offer you ways to improve it however as you are already way beyond me in the lighting game. Overall I like this very much... Mayb a diffuser on one light?

David,
Good pose but I don't like the lighting.. your right about the reflector as you need to fill the dark spot on the top of her head.

Pretty girl, decent pose and background, but what kind of lighting are you using? You may want to experiment with softening the light more as this seems a little harsh. Many shiny spots on her face.

very nice David, I reckon she would look nicer with a beautiful soft colored shirt on. The swim suit mark on the shoulder takes a little away from the shot..regards Roger

Again, terrific sharpness (why not indeed - Hassy). 80 mm is th enormal lens i think and you have perhaps gone too close with the 'capture' and created a nose. other than that - "You make good cookies Mr. Christie!" Congrats for your serious efforts at well lit portraits. I love that Porta 160 NC film.

Beautiful portrait for composition and for a very nice expression, I think you could try to improve contrast so as to limit the overexposure.

I haven't commented on anyone's pic in a loooooooooong time so here goes: "I like it" - which is true, tis pleasing, has good contact between the lens and the subject and all that, the light is soft enough tho it looks more like umbrellas than softboxes (eew, not much eew just slightly), but i think you're right about the softboxes maybe not being quite close enough (score one for diagnostics), also as we yapped about the light is positioned a little too low and is casting the shadows upwards in an unatural direction, easily fixable, and not having your subject look ghostly is generally preferable (t-hee), crop is a wee* bit tight for my taste (but who cares), like the background OOFocus as you have it - kudos~

Thanks for the comments.
The plan was to use studio strobes, which I will try again soon, but seeing as how I didn't have them yet, I used what was available, and unfortunately a 20mm lens isn't covered by the 420EX flash. I had to maximize my flash useage by not bouncing the flash as I normally would (which would have softened the light and resulted in tones/contrast that wasn't as harsh as what you see here).
Will I be able to recreate this expression? I don't think so but who knows.. it's worth a try
Cheers, Dave

Hehe... funny, cute and interesting shot! The only thing I don't like is that you used flash. That makes skintones so shiny, eyes not sparkling and ugly shadows.
