The photo was taken in the Marin Headlands in one of the old Army bunkers. I have attached a photo taken in exactly the same location that will hopefull satisfy Erlend... JCB

Thanks for the comments Julien !! The white edges are Usefilm borders but I definitely agree that the current crop is less than spectacular. If I have additional prints made, they will definitely be full frame. I actually have images of this model the I prefer but the areas of rick black cause my scanner all sorts of problems and cleaning them up is very time consuming. I think the other images have the expression that you were looking for... Thanks !! JCB

Hi Kim !! I often shoot with 3200 because I like the grain and enjoy shooting without a flash. It's easier to be unobtrusive without the flash... In regards to what the models prefer - who cares ?!?! I took this shot for me !! Even so, you are quite right and I shoot most runway shows with slower film. Thanks for the comment !! JCB

Thanks Daniel !! The focus on the second image (this one) is also rather soft. Shooting wide open yields very shallow depth of field and as my friend tilted her head, she slipped out of focus. I wish I could post more from the club but no nudity is allowed... By the way, she had rhine stones glued all the way up her spine. Looked very cool !!

Plain old TMax 3200... The negative scanner changes the image in subtle ways but for the most part, this is what I expect from the TMax in low light. It's one of my favorite films. ( I dislike the Delta 3200 - too mushy. )

Samuel, thanks for taking the time to comment on some of my photos !! Michael has done quite a bit of print work and was great at posing - without looking like he was posing. That definitely helped make this photo work. JCB

Curious to know how close you are to the road because that looks like a potentially dangerous place to stand !! It must be nice shooting this type of event over-seas because you could NEVER get that close in the U.S. Try shooting at Sears Point without an infield pass. Arrgghh !! In any case, great shot - the only thing that would make this better is if the bikes were Ducatis... JCB

I don't think that a camera that can be purchased through B&H counts as a "toy." ~ I think the Holgas are becoming so popular that they have to be considered a legitimate tool. A professional medium format camera for $20 !?!?! Excellent !!! I want one !!!

Thanks for the comments !! The brown tint is the result of printing the negatives on color paper. Portra 400BW and 400CN can both be utilized in this way. As far as the aperature goes, I think it was 2.8 but I rarely take notes when I am shooting. Keep an eye out for more pictures of Amanda... I promise you will get to see her face one of these days. Hey Larry, I sympathize completely. I've seen some clouds out at Point Reyes with shafts of light breaking through and hitting the ocean. Epic. Now that I take my photography more seriously, I ALWAYS have a camera nearby. Even if I'm just going to grab some coffee I bring a camera. Better safe than sorry.
Nice shot Chris !!

Anne - Portra BW is a c-41 process film so it gets processed in color chemistry and can be printed on color paper - often yielding a seipa-look. Check my portfolio for more examples shot with this film. I like it !! JCB

I like the lighting for this shot but a couple quick comments: I wouldn't crop quite so tight on the model - perhaps a little more head-room and more of her left arm. In addition, for some strange reason I can't tell where she is looking !! It's weird but HER eyes make MY eyes move around the frame in an odd fashion. Perhaps I've eaten too much Halloween candy tonight... In any case, a nice addition to the portfolio !! JCB

I've driven by the TA building and down the Embarcadero literally thousands of times. I worked around the corner from where this shot was taken. What I love about this photo is I have NEVER "seen" this before. This photo portrays an area with which I am very familiar, in a way I have never experienced or "seen." Excellent !! If possible, I would use Photoshop to remove the graffiti from the trash cans because it detracts from the image but other than that... Great job !! JCB

Hey Mr. D - I appreciate the comments but I would hardly call this a "snap shot." When I shoot candids, I pay careful attention to light and composition - the expressions and spacial relationships that I capture are hardly accidental. I have every intention of asking her to pose for some more "constructed" shots but I think this picture stands on it's own merits. Hope I'm not misinterpreting your critique... JCB

Detlef - it actually has nothing to do with the printing. This is a scan from a negative with a PrimeFilm 1800u film scanner. (They are approx. $200 at CompUSA - you get what you pay for.) Actual prints from this negative are very sharp and look great but sometimes the effect from the "cheapo" scanner is rather pleasing... Thanks for the comments!

Petros, I haven't made prints from the NPS negatives so I can't tell you much. I have used the film in the past but never kept any notes. I've heard very good things about it and the negatives look excellent but until I make some photographic prints I can't say anything difinitive. Thanks for the comment!

Rene, I really like these images and especially the grouping but the last frame is causing me problems... The kid extending his middle fingers changes the piece from playful to a little disturbing. I don't know if that boy knows the significance of the gesture he is making but it is in stark contrast to the other kids making funny faces. My son recently started kindergarten and is learning all sorts of four letter words from the other children - he's too young to understand their meaning but the boy in the photo looks a little older. Does anybody else see this the same way or is it just me? By the way, the frame in the lower left is my favorite !!!
