I'd like to say a few things Ram
1. Better compositions are always possible for every photograph of the world, but this is itself a real great composition.
2. When are we not learning the basics of photography?

I like this image very much, especially the faint reflections of the bird on the leaf. This is a Whitebreasted waterhen, a wary bird but sometimes it becomes friendly enough to venture in front of known people, who they know will not harm them. I saw my late grandmother used to feed one such birds and her chicks in her courtyard. Even when the chicks grew up into adults they would come up the stairs up to the kitchen door and wait for the pieces of roti to be thrown. Cheers

As long as the bird wasn't perfectly centered, I think the composition is fine. The subject matter is very cool. I've never seen any animal walk across lily pads like that. The color is awesome.

Ramamohan: I am no expert on lenses and am still learning. I am still curious what this shot would have looked like at 1/360th. I am assuming you where zoomed in all the way at 300mm. I use the 1/focal length rule to eliminate camera shake when hand holding the camera. I have also read use of a tripod gains you 2-4 stops of shutter speed depending on tripod quality and conditions such as wind etc. I understand the max sync speed limited your shutter speed in this situation. That is a problem I also have. I will soon be investing in a Canon Speedlight flash that will alow me to shoot at these faster speeds. I guess what I really would like to know is if the problem with this shot is really do to light scattering in a consumer grade lens or a tiny amount of camera shake, or some of both. I do think 1/180th is too slow to hand hold at 300mm. It would be great to see the same shot with the same exposure with your lens vs. a prime 300mm

Hello Pat, First of all thanks for visting and also your comments.

This was a handheld shot at 1/180th of a second which is the flash sync speed for D100. I used flash to put a catchlight in the eye of the birds.

Its likely there is some shake in the picture as it always happens with any handheld shot. But my comment was more about the details in the feathers of the birds. You see that the feathers have not come out well and look as if they are stuck to each other. The crispiness is just not there.

Impressive shot, the composition and DOF are perfect. I have that lens too, and I'm looking to change it whenever I can afford a new one, but this is a great example of what a good photographer can do even with a bad lens. Keep it up!

Sergio
