There's a fabulous depth in this landscape, from the vegetation in the foreground to the mountains in the distance.

A lovely soft image. I like the way the low wall separates the two bodies of water.

Many thanks Ray - I was waiting for someone to ask about HDR!

HDR = high dynamic range. An image shot in RAW holds a lot more information than you can see with normal processing. If you decrease the exposure by one stop in PS you may see more detail in the clouds. If you increase it you may see more detail in the shadows. HDR is a technique for combining a number of exposures to reveal the wider range of detail that they hold.

This is a "fake" HDR image, derived from a single RAW shot by adjusting the exposure in PS. It also works with JPGs, but to a lesser extent as they hold less information. A true HDR image is derived from a series of bracketed shots taken with different exposures.

I've been quite amazed by what it can achieve - and I've only been playing with it since Sunday. It works much better with some types of shots than others, and can be used to achieve various effects (generally enhancing an image, bringing out detail in B&W, creating surreal effects, to name a few). I'm afraid that I may never see photos the same way again!

Wonderful tones and colours - the effect is "real life" layers.

So, I see you've been playing with HDR as well. What is getting me excited is that it would seem to have potential in many different ways: generally enhancing an image, bringing out detail in B&W, creating surreal effects, to name just a few.

I guess this falls in the surreal category. I know some people dislike this style but I find that used on the right image it can be very powerful, as here.

I like the contrast of colours of the road and buildings against the slot of sky. I see what you mean about the closest street light - it does perhaps draw the eye a little too much.

Thanks Gary. It's amazing how HDR (even "fake" HDR) can bring hidden details out of an image.

Many thanks, Keith. I have just discovered HDR and worry that I will never see photographs the same way again. My technique is developing fast (since Sunday actually...) and I think I have got over the initial tendency towards over-production.

Many thanks for your comment, Joanna. Much of the impact of the colours, detail and perspective are down to the HDR processing.

So much detail - the buildings, the electricity poles, the cables, the people, the lines on the street... and yet the street is remarkably empty! So, you've captured quite a conundrum here.

Great photo - great song! Very expressive. (I saw Gary Moore play in Belgrade at the castle 18 months ago...)

A striking view. I like the lines of the quay sweeping from left to right, then back to the left again, and the limited tones. The aggressive sharpening gives it something of a painted look.

Lovely tones in the photo, but there's NO EXCUSE for that cloud of smoke. Especially in a newly emerging capital rich economy like the UAE...

From Tarifa I often see ships passing through the Straits pumping out clouds of filth. There seem to be certain locations exempt from the world's conscience...

Ah yes, I know this location well! You have done an excellent job here, especially in capturing the depth of the perspective through the various arches and the angles of the roofs.

Another lovely image in the series.

This one is a little small - any particular reason? And I'm perhaps a little surprised to see you shooting JPGs with the D2xs rather than raw.

So, there's a whole series of these which I appear to have missed, and which seems to have attracted much less attention than it deserves.

There is a complex arrangement of wonderfully smooth lines in this one, and a great range of tones ranging from white through a gradient of greys against the black background. This is excellent. It is something that has been on my list to try for a while and may just inspire me to give it a go.

The image on UF does appear to have become a little pixellated in places - presumably this is a result of compression?

Took me while to work out that this was a skier! An unexpected and striking perspective. I like the inclusion of the spectator in the foreground, and the sweep of light that seems to come from the skier's head!

This looks great, especially in the full pano mode. The eyes are led naturally across the flat farmland, to the distant hills and the snow on the peaks.
