nice composition, i like the silohette of the tree, also like the dog sitting by the smaller of the two trees, i would say make the black levels stronger on the right side though to get rid of the fence that runs along the trail...

instead of using the flash, if you had used a lamp to the side, it would have given you stronger textures and some interesting shadows as well.

I agree, this is surreal and I would have stopped as well.
Good choice on the Fuji5000, Melanie; it's got some of the best color in cameras in that range.

Nice texture on the shell. The surface on which it is sitting is visible and a bit distracting. Try something that is smooth.
