This one is tops for sure. The tight crop on the boy is better since the background is OOF on purpose and does not lend much to the shot. I find the effects you "added" subtle and no more than you would normally use in film processing anyway, it's just a Digital equivalent. As for the flash, the D70 does have balanced fill so it only adds as much as it needs by sampling every part of the frame prior to firing.I like the shot. -mm

Thanks Joggie. Yes the problem here is a very dark foreground and a lighter background which was corrected slightly with a custom curve. The light was very pale in the background. Glad you like it!

Looks like wonderful morning light! I like the angle and perspective you chose here, it's very attractive with the seagrass and beach in the foreground. What a coincidence that you, myself and Jon Soto all posted these lighthouse shots at the same time! Cool. I love it. -mm

Wow, 3 posts of lighthouses at the same time on this page today, what a cool coincidence, so I just had to comment on yours, mine is a couple rows over! It's a nice view of Montauk light but the panarama gets shrunk down too small by UF. Great job!

I like what Petros said about this shot as it applies to all our efforts in general. When we are our own harshest critics and biggest fans we will get to that place where the "masses" will admire our work but we will know the secret effort rerquired to get the shot. You are there...P. -mm

Great subject but I find the colors a little too artificial. I have not been there but the canyon looks way too blue. What do you think???

The debate over "manipulating" digital images is still raging but I know that I want my photos to be a "real" rendition of what I saw with my eye. It's not a problem really. Learning how to use the tools to achieve that goal is what will set you apart from the masses. I think you have the most important part covered... you "see" what others do not at first glance. Get my drift? You have the most important tool already in hand, ah yes, beauty and brains...a powerful combination. - Cheers, -mm

Love IT!!! I'm posting some Pix this week that show the same problem. I captured what I thought I saw on digital only to be reminded that It fell short of reality. I started using curves to compensate. The human eye can see many more variations in light than film or digital can capture. That's why we need tools like PS to help us reclaim what we know we saw!! Well done P. I think your talent is in landscapes!!! -mm

It's a great shot. Nothing wrong with postcards, I consider that a high compliment when I get one. Where are my friends? I've posted some "paradise" shots, but this is top notch. Cheers Peta , you have the mojo workin' these days. -mm

One word? FUN???? I spent hours, days, weeks setting up this shot, just lying there on the beach waiting for the perfect moment to capture this amazing athelete at the absolute pinnacle of his skill and energy and all I get is a lousy fun? Do you have any idea how much sunblock and Mai Tai mix I went through in search of this extreme photgraphic opportunity? What is Usefilm coming to? How do you expect to ever get on the featured critique section of the front page with just one little insignificant 1 word commentary? OK, I'm done. Was my tongue imbedded far enough in cheek? -mm

The water was amazing, 76 degrees, ultra clear. I did run into someone who said the only place they liked better than Hawaii is St. Barts! ;-)

Thank you , my friend...-mm

Thanks George. Yes I was on the beach and it was kind of an overcast day but I was close enough to get these handheld with the 75-240mm. At the long end on the D100 it equates to 360mm so not too bad cosidering how fast these guys hit the wave. Cheers, -mm

Jeesh, didn't know you could get your own lighthouse. Excellent shot Mark. I love the reflection in the tide pool. I got some coming in the next few days from a lighthouse in Hawaii but I'm sure it's been shot a million times. Keep em coming Dave.

Cheers,

Had to lean against the glass frame to get the shot. Any darker (more lights) and there would have been no way to handhold the shot. Thanks for the comment, I need to get back there to the observation deck so I don't have to shoot through the glass. Hey there's only so many hours in a day and I have to make sure there's enough drinking time! -mm

It's a great moment. Too bad the lightning is mostly at the side of the building because I actually think straightening the perspective would be more important than cloning out the power lines. Great capture still the same. -mm
