About Calypte Anna.
This shot was taken in October at the Capistrano's mission, CA.
Some interesting facts about Hummingbirds.
1) They are most abundant and diverse near the Equator.
2) Of some 330 species, only 16 breed North of Mexico. In other words, 95% of the world's hummingbird species occur south of the U.S.- Mexico border.
3) California has only 6 species of them.
4) Costa Rica has about 60 species.
5) their hyperkenetic wings can beat 80 times a second.
6) While perching, its cranberry-size heart (20% of the body volume)averages 500 beats a minute and 1,200 beats during high-speed chases with other hummingbirds.
7) it's heart is a flexible muscle, able to power down during periods of cold or scare food, beating just 30 times a minute until conditions improve.
8) The smallest one is the bee hummingbird os Cuba weighing less than 2 grams and the largest one is the giant hummingbird from the Peruvian Andes.
9) Hummingbirds spend almost 80% of their lives perched.

Yamil: Wonderful! We don't get the Annas here but we do get Calliope, Black-Chinned, Broad=Tailed and, MOSTLY, Rufous.

Yamil I would not call it luck, you put yourself in the right place at the right time with all the right settings! The only bit of luck is the fact that he did show up, but you used your experience of the place to make your odds better..
You have become a great bird in flight photographer and I for one am Proud of you!!

Hello Mohamed,
Thank you for your comment.
Outside the Capistrano's mission there is a garden with flowers that hummingbirds frequent.
This guy was drinking nectar from the flowers and he was not paying much attention to my, so I took advantage.
I have been trying to take more shots of hummingbirds in flight unsuccessful.
This is the best I got so far and I am glad to share it with you guys.
They are very fast moving "targets" so definitely to get them in flight you need a bit of luck.
Take care.

Dear Asher,
Thank you for your nice comment.
I got lucky with this hummingbird.
He was just asking me for a picture and I tried to please him.
Take care.

May I ask how you did it?
Is it a hit of chance, or days of waiting and trying?
Very successful and beautiful shoot.

Wow, absolutely brilliant detail, DoF and colors. One can imagine the type of effort and skill it would take to get such a beutifull picture of such a fast moving subject.
