I would also say as what might be a tripod shot, that you could focus a little further on a second exact same angle, and blend the two photos in software.
As for software, I think you could produce the dodging and burning that are needed, with just what you have here. But it's best to get any light at the source, at the scene.
And there any number of 'throw flashes', like a ring flash, that you could use. You could bounce off little shades or umbrellas. You could position small slave flashes, with diffusers. I use my own homemade throw flashes, with either commercial or homemade diffusers. There's a lot of ways to get light on the subject. A ring flash might be one thing to consider, if you can control the light.
But those are generally used for macros, where the lens otherwise is too close to the subject, and interferes with any built-in flash. And this is shot at some distance away.

Dear Ms. Duntley,
I read your question about ring-flashes & as I've used them quite a lot, I dare address you. I prefer to use them so that they shine through semi-transparent objects, such as flowers. This way I don't have to depend on sunlight to capture the flowers' glory. As I don't have t.t.l. (through the lens light metering, in case you're not familiar with the term) it took some trial & error to find the correct aperture & distance to use the gadget, but the results are very satisfying, at least for me.

He uses a micro lens and a ring flash, quite successfully. But I do know there is an art and science to this and he can either scare you silly or straight on this...
On the other hand, I do not use a flash, but I really have a DoF problem and do have to push the ISO in some cases.

Beautiful shot- are these Bradford Pear blossoms? I love taking shots of these too- and they are tiny. I don't have a macro ring or a real macro lens either- I just use my 50mm f1.8 on a tripod and then crop tight. I agree that a higher iso will help, as will a larger aperature. A pleasing image for sure!

Hi Kelly.....Canon do a very good macro ring flash, not sure how it would work with florals and their natural colours though. Had use of one nearly 20 years ago but not my cup of tea.
I like this lovely composition sweetie with it's delicate colouring and wonderful details. I feel that altering your ISO as Rina suggests might be the better alternative as flash can be too fierce on some images and PS work is time consuming and fraught with complications.
