Hi Rob,
Yes you can spend hours in the lower canyon. The upper canyon is easy to get into and you have to have a tour guide,so they limit your time to 2 hours there. The lower canyon is harder to get into.you enter a small crack in the earth and then you have to go down a few ladders to get to the bottom. You don't need a guide there unless you want one. We didn't ask for a guide so they said to just go ahead. I think we were there from 10AM until around 3PM. We could have stayed longer but the light had left by then.
