Ok, this is as close as I can come--but not the shot I wanted because the background isn't hot enough. In your case, once you have brought her shoulder around so that she is in shadow, set your camera to manual and meter on the hot background. Now, use your ttl flash to open up her face--the shot will be spot on. Deliberately set up this shot and play with it. I think you will find some interesting results.;

Karen...this is my bread and butter stuff...so here are some suggestions...your own style is...well...your own style...so it doesn't matter what I say. The first thing that needs to be done is to move her right shoulder around so that her face is completely in shadow without the hot spot on her face. The attachment shows a spot meter on the face with the background blowing out. This would not be my first choice in this instance as your background is 60% of the shot. I can't find the image I want to compare with this--or one that isn't a bad scan--but let me look and I will continue.

I agree with Don's observations but its still a fine image. You really have a great talent for portrait work Karen. Keep up the excellent images.

Nice picture, posing etc. The sun is a little hot on the side of her head.. I think the wheat is oats!!!
Nice idea. Don

Karen, nice to see your good eye applied to more than still lifes of flowers (they are great by the way and got my vote for the recent photo contest). I have to agree with Richard on the strong lighting at model's right, but the wonderful color combination and pleasant composition still make this a pretty good portrait.

I like the composition of the photo and framing of the model in the field. The contrast between browns of the wheat and red of the dress is fantastic. However, feel the softening of the face and glow of the light against the face is a bit too much. I think the effect is just a tad too much.
