That's exactly what I want to go do! I was there for work, and we were about an hour outside of Guangzhou. Still pretty insane what the city life was like..paved roads, a bonus.
I only go for a week at a time, but this next time, i'm going to take a few days to travel, and shoot images.
So blown away by that day in Guangzhou. Reminded me of Prague before the turn over.
Thanks again, and look fwd to hearing about other places to visit next time i'm there!

i'm just thinking now that there must be a different rail company operating between hong kong and mainland china than china rail. that would explain the difference in uniforms, prices, service and other things. within mainland china, its all different.

hi joel.... dont know where you've been in china yet, but the little towns are a million miles from anywhere we're used to. when you visit again, make sure to go to the far west, and the southwest. those are the regions least affected by the rapid development of china these days.

I don't recall the train line (looking for my ticket now). All of the girls on the train were dressed the same. The gloves came off as soon as we left for HK. The train took a different route, and dragged us through avery station on the way back to the Kowloon Station.
Interesting to note, they chagred for tea ($25 hk$), and my co-worker noted that it was the best tea he's ever had. For a run down train, the tea was served in a silver tea pot. Classic.

amazing, and true! ..but what was shocking, was the poverty as soon as you get across the border. I guess that as the modern age gets closer to the little towns, times will change for Mainland China.
Can't wait to go back and explore!

on another note, i'm wondering who that young lady works for. that isnt the standard uniform for china rail, which is dark blue and with a different hat and badges.

hong kong and china, while (now) part of the same country, are worlds apart. but getting closer by the day. regarding the trains in china, the differences between hard seat and soft sleeper on different trains are also worlds apart, within the same country even.

I'm a huge candid photo fan. Since I've had the 24-70L, it's so heavy, that i've not been able to get any great candid shots... possible because I didn't have any good subjects... enter...China.
I was walking away for this shot, and held the camera backwards, and just burst about 10 pics, holding the camera as straight as possible under my arm. (many rules about taking pictures in China that can land you jail...so had to be fast).
Thanks so much for the comments! I'm so glad that you're into the candid shots! i'll try and get some more online later today.
I have to say, in regards to the narrative, it's the one thing that I think we need more of here on UF.com. When I look through all of the great photogrphy books, I love the story from the photographer about thei image. Technical details are wonderful, but the story behind a picture adds life. now... if this were an abstract of a straw on a table... then... you can skip the story :)

I have a great mate who has just spent 6 months in China learning Madarin - his 7th language! He is coming around in a week or so with his photos - I'm looking forward to that!
