I have found that my 20D will permit me to capture both a small jpeg file and a RAW file at the same time. I don't know if the same is true for the Rebel but I suspect it is. The JPEG 'small' images are useful to scan the shots for keepers. If you are like me, you throw away about 80% of your shots. The RAW files are useful for the best images, like this one. I would have been really excited to capture this photo!
When I get back to the computer I upload all the small jpeg images from the card to the computer, then review and delete losers. I use windows picture viewer since it is quick for screening small jpeg files. Then I write down the ID numbers of the best images. If you ever intend to print or crop you will definitely want those RAW files. I then upload the selected best RAW files, and I double-check to be sure they uploaded correctly. Then I delete all files on the card so I can be ready for the next shots with a clean card.
By shooting in both RAW and JPEG you need more card storage space, but you prepare yourself for the moment you capture a great shot. If you shoot only in small JPEG format you don't have any chance to enlarge or sell outstanding images like this one.

thanks for that, it does look much better.
the photos were taken for a kids page on a smallish newspaper.
they put about 6-9 photos up on a page so that kids can see themselves and want to play more sport.
for those small number of photos you have to work real hard. 3 hours of chasing kids around 8 fields.
there were 12 different teams from different areas
and papers want names and phone numbers.
the saying about animals and children is really true.
i find the getting on the field behind or beside the ref is best as all the kids just stick around the ball.
using a wide angle zoom and shoot lots of photos till you think you have a few keepers.
do you shoot in raw or jpeg, i find small jpeg is better for this kid of stuff as you have a lot of sports photos to sift thru.

What a great and memorable family photo, Peter. I am surprised you were able to get such crisp sharpness front-to-back at only f 5.6. To me, the big distraction is the background. Obviously with a snapshot like this you would have destroyed the spontaneity if you had asked them to pose in a better location.
I loaded your pic into photoshop to see if I could modify the background. I used gaussian blur a background mask, and I cloned out background details that were conflicting with the edges of the faces. Then I slightly sharpened the eyes with an eye mask. To me it puts emphasis back on the important details.

Good job! I do hope the papers add these pics with the sports pics, afterall its a big part of the days reward for these kids!
