Doyle...After further research, some clarification is needed to give you a more accurate response regarding the reflection. I now what you mean about the stamen. There's nothing wrong with YOUR brain, mine however...well, we know where I stand! ;)

I am posting the original which proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that YOU are sharp as a tack! While my response is not altogether inaccurate, (there is a true reflection) I did not realize the "flood" effect produced a mirror image reflection over the "true" reflection. This was the first time I used that plug-in...excuse my ignorance, please!

Take care...Robin

For you Doyle (and others) a bit more detail about the "set-up"...

The flower is on a mirror, and the reflection is a true reflection...as I mentioned the "water" effect is a plug-in...more on that later. The stamen being visible...it is what it is, visible (I'd venture to guess) because of the angle I shot from???

The plug-ins (very cool effects to choose from) can be found at flamingpear.com. They offer free 30 day trial downloads...I'm not sure if the downloads are compatible with programs other than Adobe. Since I use PS Elements 4.0 I did not look any further. Not very expensive if you choose to purchase...about $20 individually, or you can purchase packages containing 4 or 5 effects for about $50...tax included. The effects are FUN to play with...try it, you'll like it! Any more questions?...just ask, I'll be happy to answer!

Thank you for the wonderful comment Doyle! Of course there is a joke...wouldn't be a KOC (King of Comedy) comment without one! And you are right, "on the wall" is missing...still trying to figure out how to get that shot!

TAke care...Robin

ps...genius, sweet!

Beautiful work Robin . . . I adore the use of color here. Your reflection here is a PS work, no doubt? I see in the comment to Jim that you have utilized mirrors . . . but where? Under the image? The only SLIGHT distraction is the central Stamen area of the bloom which . . . at that angle . . . feels like it shouldn't be in the reflection at all . . . see? It being inside makes it seem as though the petals would prevent it from being reflected below.

I love the water effect . . . which PS program are you using (I'm curious about PS 4.0 Elements plug-ins)?

This image surrounded by the sea of inky black is an exquisite, oriental-like, composition of beauty. Truly great use of light and color . . . and well composed, of course! I like the DOF (though it's wider than you've been using lately) since it pulls in the dimensions of this flower VERY well.

I see the "...who's the fairest..." title is a sequel to "mirror, mirror" and can't help but recall "On the wall" seems to be missing . . . Hmmmmm . . . flower . . . on the wall . . . WALLFLOWER! . . . There's a joke in there somewhere . . . :)

Genius caliber work Robin! (What else?) :)

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Hi Jim...I will explain as best I can! The black background came naturally when shooting. I "set up shop" in front of a well lit (bright morning light) window and began experimenting...shooting angles, light angles, reflections, camera settings. This one was shot from (very near) eye level, with the light illuminating the flower, and no harsh light reflecting from the mirror surface. That, along with the settings used, produced the black FG and BG. Although I was shooting at an ISO of 400, I think 200 would work just as well. If I remember correctly, I only needed to make a few adjustments in ps...levels, etc. The "water" effect is an Adobe plug-in.

Hope that helps...give it a try! Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.

Take care...Robin

Very nice indeed -a beautiful composition. How did you get all that black? I'd really appreciate it if you could comment on your technique here.
