About The Perseid meteor shower peaked on August 12 2006. It was on this date that the Earth passed through the ancient dust left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle during one of its previous passes near the Sun. Normally, the Perseids provide a great light show. However, this year was met with less favorable conditions. The moonlight illuminated the skies and rendered all but the brightest meteors invisible. But because I love meteors, I made an effort to catch the display. Over the course of the night from a site well away from city light pollution, I postitioned myself and my cameras to face away from the moonlight, and I counted dozens of meteors. Most of the ones I saw were short, brief streaks... but luckily, my camera (set to take continueous 30sec exposures with the Canon timer Remote) captured one spectacular meteor, or fireball! This one was probably between magnitude -6 to -8 which translates to the brightness of a quarter moon. Knowing how rare these beauties are, I was quite pleased! Like fishing, it takes a lot of luck to catch even one of these brief and speedy cosmic streakers. And I caught a big one :0)

Excellent capture, Pierre. I was able to watch the shower while out doing night photos but not lucky enough to capture any. This is an outstanding photograph and one you should be proud of... you are right, it is like fishing.

Hi Mary,

I only wished I had seen this fireball ( I was asleep while the camera was dutifully doing its work :0)
This year's Perseids should be much better, with dark skies and no interfering Moon on August 12 !!!

Thanks Dave! I sent the picture to a few sources but interest in the Perseids was generally low because of the bright moon. Too bad... because they still put on a nice show.

If you can, check out the Geminids on December 13. They should be beautiful!

A spectacular shot, Pierre! Congratulations on this wonderful achievement. Sure there was some luck involved, but you were there and ready, with the proper equipment to take advantage of it. Remember, "luck is where preparation and opportunity meet!" Hope you get this published in an astronomy magazine!
Dave.

Fantastic capture, your patience was well rewarded. I love the spectrum of colours through the ionisation trail. The only shame is it didn't quite make bolide status!

Attached is the same photo showing the constellation lines for Ursa Minor and the star Polaris for reference...
