About Vanessa returning to her Goth roots during Saturday's shoot. This was hand-held at 1/10 second, with ISO pushed almost as high as it would go. I didn't want any flash to spoil the beautiful ambient light. Once again, my Canon image-stabilized 17-85 to the rescue (but only because I was too lazy to go fetch my tripod).

Please try to ignore the copyright. This was a TFP session.

Thanks Mark.
Yeah, I knew that looking at her in the pose, that ANY amount of fill flash would have shattered the abmience. So...I was faced with a choice: do I shoot it hand-held, or march up out of the basement, and over to the adjacent building to get my Tripod?

I decided to put the camera on self-timer to avoid finger-shake, and try to breathe slowly. at 1/5 second, I would not have succeeded without my image-stabilized zoom. I checked my shot afterward, and it was sharp, so we moved along to another location.

I also realized how important it was to get a catch-light in those beautiful eyes, which is why I told her to look up into the crack above that was our sole source of illumination.

Glad ya like it, man!

Did I like this one before? I like it as a stand alone here. When up against the other shots the outfit doesn't move me (the shoes and socks look like she got them from the lead singer of BUCKCHERRY - they work on him in a goofy way)....CHECK THAT , PTK stopped by, I've had it happen a few times throughout the years but it is SO rare !! Good one, I do like her expression !!! (Let me quess, you asked to act like she was looking into the future of America - I know that look, I know that fear) With THAT said it's a great shot, would have NEVER been the same with a fill flash IMHO......

Paul, this image is one of my favourite ones. The light is very effective. And this attractive girl looks even more beautiful in contrast with the background.

Hi, Ardalan.
The reason I took this shot down here in the basement is that Vanessa and I were 'exploring' for different poses in interesting places.

I'm just happy that the shot wasn't blurry, as it is one of the best of that day.

Thanks for your warm comments!

Hi Paul,
I got a go through your shots and i came up with this one for the at first,
Very well done.

the posture of this young lady is very expressive of a happening. I dont know what it is or was or could be. there should be something for a very specific reason that you took it in this spot.

Well, how she holds herself, and legs and technically her legs are making a very nice angle with walls as well as her hands, head till it comes to her eyes and facial expression.

Ok friend, thanks a lot for sharing this shot with us,

Next time please carry your Tripod with you , :P. (just kidding)

Cheers,
Ardalan

Thanks.
When this shot developed in front of me, I was honestly trying not to get TOO excited, since it was a very slow shutter speed without my tripod. Later, I DID get very excited when I could see it was not blurry.

WOW! Perfect, not JUST a portrait, a great and very unique pose, something we need to see on that subejct, congrats also for the lighting support on her face that really makes it the main 'target' of the shot.
Cheers

If I had lights, I wouldn't have needed such a slow shutter speed, Jim! ;)

This was natural sky light coming in from the stairwell above us.

To make it as steady as possible (there was nothing to brace against in this position) I put my 20D on self-timer, and breathed slowly for 10 seconds, so my shutter finger wouldn't make it worse.

Such an unusual pose but I like it Paul, wish the inscription weren't in the image though (Just My Opinion), nice even lighting & catchlights on V's eyes. Thanks much for the comment to my image, best wishes.

Great shot, it looks like a still from a movie promo. Wow, you have steady hands - Handheld at 1/10! What were you using for lights? They are very effective.
