Wow, what a horrible thing when "main" photographers have everything completely wrong. So sad.

I was worried that my on-camera flash could not recycle fast enough, and I was probably right. I decided to use my AlienBee 400 with a shoot-through umbrella (a brolly box) and my light stayed with me, even in rapid-fire toward the end of the show.
Thanks for the comments.

Karl, This light is a little softer than I could ever hope to get from my flash, even if I put on a Lumiquest diffuser. This was shot with one AlienBee400 with a brolly box (a wrap-around shoot-through umbrella that's often called a 'poor-man's softbox').
I had been called at the last minute, knowning I was attending to shoot a couple of my favorite models, to ask me if I would shoot the whole show. They had planned on two photographers, and one of them backed out. I said I would.
Now the lighting was non-existent. This was in a nightclub with the expected uber-dim lights (room photo attached), and there was no formal runway, so the models simply walked up one side of the room, and then back down the other to my station. I didn't hesitate to set up my strobe on station and do some test shots.
Imagine my complete surprise when the 'main' photographer shows up with his digi-rebel (nothing wrong with that) and is armed only with his POP-UP FLASH! "What a Maroon!" -Bugs Bunny
I'll post some more from the event, but my take-away from last night was that I can get some sumptuously soft lighting, if need be, with nothing more than one strobe.
I also want to thank you for your helpful reply to this fashion show newbie. I feel much better about my abilities now.
