Great texture, colours and composition. It creates quite the visceral reaction.
Very well done

Spot on about the point and click - Jpeg for mine . . . Blech! Normally I have the Nikon with me even there (aviaries) when I'm working. Will wait for the shrunken head! Had a freind carve some for a time and store them in sealed cylinders in vinegar. He called them "Pickled Perverts"! LoL! Don't need to describe them . .. use your imagination. A bizarre talent, but a talent none-the-less! :)

Doyle I <~~~~~

Followed your thought, Doyle and asked my daughter to carve an apple and send it to me. Time will tell. I think it might turn out looking like a shrunken head. Props for the finch; dynamite! Now thinking of getting a point and shoot to have handy at all times. Good idea. I had a Canon G2 and gave it to my son, so now will start looking around for another. Only complaint is that most shoot in .jpg but not RAW or DNG.

Michele - Thanks so much for your great comments! I really appreciate them. I spent more time on this one than I usually do on most and had a lot of fun "processing" the apple. Doyle Chastain suggested I carve an apple and dry it out and despite the fact that I cannot carve or draw I think I may give it a try.

Wonderful textures and colors on this old apple. If you hadn't written what it was in the 'about' I wouldn't have had a clue as to what it was altho it is very interesting + colorful . Amazing how it looks now !!! TYou are totally original with your projects jan .. they are very resfreshing.

Thanks, Doyle. And it is a good thought. Just not sure I have worked out in my head the vision of the outcome. But I am pretty sure I will try it along with a carved potato.

Doyle -- Thanks for your comments and for the idea. I used to carve apples and potatoes as a child but I am the worst carver in the world. So if I take that approach I will have my daughter (Lisa) carve one and mail it to me. She is really good at all forms of carving, drawing, painting etc. The only thing that would hold me back is that the approach is representational instead of abstract. I was trying to come up with disguises for fruit. So anywho, I need to think about that, as it is an entirely different approach.
Thanks for the great feedback; this was lots of fun.

Jan:

This is a brilliant experiment with amazing results. Next, take a raw one, peel it, don't spray it, but carve a face on it!! I've seen that done with amazing results which you'd likely love! THIS experiment was great and new to me! I think your composition and color are good too!

Doyle I<~~~~~

Bruce -- Thanks for your comment. The peeler makes it easy to get an even peel as it is spring loaded and adjustable. If I had tried to do that by hand it would not have come close to looking like an apple. Not sure what prompted me to try this but I do get weird ideas from time to time. If you look in my portfolio you will see a couple of other weird ones including my Acorn picture.
--Best to you, Jan

Bruce Harper   {K:5305} 2/5/2007
You're a dab hand with the peeler Jan, by taking it off so evenly you have added to the abstractness of final image with the curved lines. Got to wonder what would make you do it but hey the results were worth it.

OOh Goodie, creative food captures from you would be very intersting to see.....when I was younger we used to carve faces in apples and let them dry out into little old men and women, was pretty cool, 'til their faces went mouldy and green....LOL

Bek -- Thanks so much! I like apples too and eat one every day (but the quality of the local supply varies quite a bit from week to week). This picture was fun to do because I was not really sure how the apple was going to turn out at the end of the process.

Meg -- Thanks for your comments. No plastic was harmed in any way in the making of this photo.
First the Fuji was peeled and removed from the peeler. Then dipped in a chemical to prevent oxidation. Then dried by a heat vent and eventually coated with a brush using a light coat of crinkly varnish. Dried some more, speared back onto the peeler shaft and photographed.
--Best regards, Jan

Very interesting and original macro design. You've capture the texture and colours very well. The design is quite interesting with the concentric arcs and the diagonal of the shaft entering the image from the lower right. Simple but effective. Well done Jan.

Before I read the about, I just sat and tried to think what this could be... Thinking of course that the title had no relation... ~~GRIN~~...

Got the better of me, title or no title I would never have worked out this was an apple Jan... DOHHH!!!... the texture is wonderful, ditto on the light and tones... :)

Very clever Sir...:) and up there for creativity... :)
