About An old shot from when I was studying photography at college last year, unused and unshown at the time. I've decided to revisit it now as it needed loads of retouching which I wasn't skilled enough to even remotely attempt at the time. I'm better at it now, but this is still a long way from being perfect... maybe in another year or two I'll be able to get it just right!

Superb Patrick...:) Polly was certainly worth re-cycling... The mood is very *lost love* as Annemette said...:)

My first thought was like you had shot this through a heavy plastic sheet... but now I've read your explanation to Jan I know better ~~GRIN~~...

This is truly wonderful Sir...:)

Excellent...:)

Before reading the technique comments, this photo actually made me think it was an old photo taken through a train window, many years ago...so ethereal.

It was SO difficult to do because I had to hand-hold the camera as the slightest movement completely changed what I saw through the glass. I got one workable shot from 30. Literally a centimetre right or left resulted in a totally different distortion... a tripod didn't work as I needed to be able to respond to the slightest shift in posture of the lovely Polly... she had the patience of a saint. The idea to use rippled glass I ripped off from the man I consider to be the finest fashion photographer that ever lived, Erwin Blumenfeld...

Very clever idea; I may experiment with the technique. I might have some old, rippled glass in my workshop. Thanks for the tip. I had assumed it was done with a Photo-shop filter but most likely your approach would give you more control.

Hi Jan... I didn't actually apply a soft effect... this was shot through rippled glass and the lens was defocused slightly at a wide aperture. If you look at my shot 'Frog' (http://www.usefilm.com/image/1237686.html) it's done in the same way, but in that instance the lens was focused on the glass with a small aperture.

Patrick -- Very dreamy and beautiful. As I understand it, you applied the soft effect because of the unwanted effort to rehabilitate the portrait otherwise. That is an idea I will put in my book for future reference. The results are outstanding and you get extra credit for recycling! :)

Amazingly beautiful and dreamy looking like an old love lost in time and space. So soft and suggestive.
Best wishes
Annemette
