About we were lucky to stumble across this polar bear today while touring around the bay near Kimmirut in southern Baffin Island. A gorgeous day and the bear was a big bonus!

Hi Deb... hmmm, well, Churchill comes to mind as one of the best areas to see polar bears. Of course, one is usually on those tundra buggy's and may not get the best view of them. One can always go up to one of the more remote communities and hire locals as guides, though that can be a bit pricy with no assurance that one will even see any bears. Southampton Island, Wager Bay and Arctic Bay are places that come to mind. Of course I heard that there were lots of bears within ~100km of Kimmirut on South Baffin last summer... For scenery, Arctic Bay is hard to beat! Good luck with your plans and thanks for the comment. Cheers, Gary

Hi Gary, thanks for your recent comments. I would kill for a polar bear photo like this! Any suggestions on tours? I have been to Yellowknife a few times, but that is all. Would like some wild and remote views like yours. Regards, Deb

Thanks AJ. It WAS an amazing experience! I've seen a few polar bears before, but that was by far the closest and most amazing one... I think I got about 100 pictures in the short time we were around it. Cheers, Gary

Hi Nicole! yes, thankfully the bear was running away! I do feel very fortunate to have been that close to a wild polar bear. One of those memories that won't soon fade. Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Gary :)

Haha, yeah, that wouldn't be too good. I'm not overly fond of bears up close and personal, if you catch my drift! (;

Hi Robert... not sure that they are drowning. I've heard of polar bears swimming many miles from shore. I think the lack of ice just makes hunting seals that much harder. Either way, hopefully the bears will be able to adapt to less ice as that's what seems to be happening.

Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Gary

Thanks Michael. Well, you gotta remember that the 200mm with digital is really 300mm! But we were far enough away that had it decided to turn the tables and chase us, we'd have had no troubles getting away. Cheers, Gary

Yes I hear they are drowning from the lack of ice. All I know is I'm not looking forward to the day I run into a bear just with a camera out in the wild? Pretty good shot with the snow and ice and the whites. Maybe bring the tint down towards green just a little.

You are fortunate indeed, but even with a 200 mm lens I think you are a little close for comfort...

Great shot with composition.

Hi Jeff, well the bear didn't quite jump out of the water, but had just crawled out onto that little ice pan. And the water was just pouring off of him. I was just working up on Baffin for a few weeks. Kinda glad these guys don't live around here!! Thanks for the comment. Cheers, Gary

Hi Jess... we were really quite close, though this one has been slightly cropped for effect. And I wasn't too terrified because the bear seemed to be more afraid of us than we of him, and as such was always swimming or running away from us. I'd have been scared if the boat motors had conked out on us!! hahaha. Cheers, Gary :)

Nice shot. It looks as though he just jumped out of the water. What a wonderful area you must live in. I really hope the world gets it sh*t together and these guys still have a home in the future. Take as many of these as you can, you never know when you won't see them anymore.

Wowwww!!! What a shot! Were you really close or did you just use a lot of zoom? Either way, it's very impressive. I think I would have been terrified! Haha

Hi Ahmed... well, compared to where you live I'm sure it's a bit on the cool side! But it was actually quite warm for here. The sea with all the ice does make it cooler when on the water though. thanks for the comment. Cheers, Gary
