Hi Kes,
An interesting discussion involving the positioning of the guitar against the backdrop. I think I know what Spencer is getting at. If the rug was a little out of focus, the guitar would stand out more three dimensionally. What I really like about this image is how you got the exposure on the whites and ivorys without blowing them out.

Hi Spencer, yes, that little Sony was really a neat camera, with a limited manual shutter & aperture mode. Unfortunately it had a dust collection problem (sort of a miniture Kirby), and the third time it was out of warranty and the cost to repair it was more than the replacement cost of the camera.
Wow, shooting colorblind has to be very challenging! I am most impressed!
By "good stands" I hope you mean a block of cement with a towel over it, as that fits my budget. And I have the block! :) I will give it a try...somehow...someday!

I simply am amazed at what some point & shoots are capable of - 2.8 aperture!! That is nuts! Our 24-70 2.8 lens is bigger than most point & shoots on its own! Just craziness - makes me really respect the P&S cameras.
I actually assumed you had studio lighting here at how even the lighting was across the image. Very nicely done!!
For what I was proposing - I'd stand 8 feet up from the floor ... or however high I could get. Though, best of luck suspending that guitar in mid-air.  Actually, there are some good stands for this. Anyway, for the lighting you would pretty much have to at least use off-camera flash. Basically you would aim to get rid of the shadows and keep the lighting even.
And yep, colorblind - red/green & blue/yellow. I have a poorly made website on it - http://www.colorblindfriendly.com . Being colorblind definitely makes post processing difficult. Though, it really isn't all that bad - I can at least usually tell skin tones ... usually. I'd say the worst part of it is seeing the focal lights inside the canon camera - all the focal points are RED!!! I can't see those suckers 1/2 the time.
Anyway, best of luck! I think I will go post another image now. :)

You're right, the eye gets distracted by the rug. "Lost in the details" would be a nice title for this shot!
I took this quite some time ago and wasn't going to post it but after the sell changed my mind. Maybe the rug detail is what made me choose the "home" project. Old guitar name and an old rug. I kind of like the combo! :) (Although not well enough to keep the guitar, lol)
This was shot at ISO 400, f/2.8, 1/40 and with the point & shoot's flash. It has been sharpened...perhaps too much.
Your suggestions for a re-shoot are greatly appreciated. I may need a photo to hawk some other instruments! When you say 4 feet off and 8 feet above, do you mean 8 feet above the guitar, or 8 feet above the floor? Would you forego the on camera flash to avoid a shadow on the floor, or would that even be a potential problem? I have a couple of older Morris strobes and rarely drag them out due to laziness, however, it is usually worth the effort. I would be pretty nervous about a jig holding a guitar that high...gonna have to be thin enough to hide...suggestions?
Color blind? Really? Your wife's hair is red, as I recall from your shot. :) :) :)

You know, if I wasn't colorblind, I bet I could see a lot more in that rug. I can tell there are other colors than blue .... hmmm ... but I can't tell what they are. It is a nice guitar.
Overall, a nice shot. But, nothing 'pops' to me. Perhaps if the guitar was higher and you used a lower aperture to show some depth of field it would work a bit better. As it stands with everything in focus, the guitar gets lost within all the detail of the rug.
If I were to do this shot, I'd lift the guitar about 4 feet off the ground & shoot it from about 8 feet up with the 24-70 2.8L lens getting the same framing but at 2.8 or 3.2. This would make the guitar look crisp and in focus but make the rug slightly out of focus. I might even have to bump the aperture p to 4.0-5.6 with this method.

Thanks Anna! Yes, the rug makes the shot work...hey, it just hit me that now all I have is a RUG!!!....lol!
...and the other guitars...a mandolin or two...a piano...none of which I can play. I can play the radio! ...but we don't get to many stations out in the sticks...:):)

Ha, I know its about the guitar, but I was paying attention to the rug! (bet you can't tell what industry I'm in.) I a succor for color gradation and aqua blues. I like how dark and subtle the background is against the cream of the stratocaster. I also enjoy the diagonal lines and how the colors look like they drop off into nothingness at the corners. Great job! Hmm...I know I'm due for a dentist appointment.

Thank you, Luis! This Strat was made in Japan...I believe in the late 1980s. This has never been a real high dollar Fender, and I think Fender is remaking this Strat(again), but not for sure about that. At any rate, my selling price hardly made a dent in the orthodontist's bill. :(
But the fellow that bought it repairs instruments and has a six-string Strat to match it. So it has a good home. :)
