Now, if someone took a photo like this last week and posted it on usefilm, people would probably just disregard it as some boring personal snapshot, but pull it from the drawer after it's been sitting there since 1977, and it reveals a real slice of life from that era.

That should tell us something about what we photograph. Often what appear to be the most mundane scenes become the most representative of their time.
