About This region in western South Dakota was known to the Lakota Sioux as "mako sica". The first Europeans to see it, fur trappers coming down from Canada, called it "les mauvaises terres". Both terms mean the same thing- bad lands.

This is a stunning photograph, with wonderful toning,good variation in shades, and an exceptional visual mix of textures. It's one of the most mood evoking shots I've seen in awhile.
