Charlie,
I disagree - a tree is never just a tree...this looks like a candidate for the book "Meetings with Remarkable Trees" about great trees in England, Scotland, and Ireland (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0375752684/ref=sib_rdr_dp/103-2341889-5752628?%5Fencoding=UTF8&no=283155&me=ATVPDKIKX0DER&st=books). The author did one for remarkable trees of the world too. I don't mind the fading but I think the blue is disconcerting. I don't know much about the color of stone in that area but a brownish, tannish tone would make it easier to understand.
I wondered if people would object to the shallow DOF of my solomon photo. I wonder if you would do me a favor and look at my photo 'the temptation of eve.' These photos are taken with a very limited DOF lenscap projection lens I made (same as the solomon photo) and I wonder if taken as a group/series would change your thoughts. It certainly doesn't have too - we all have our preferences. I am just curious.
Mary
PS I wish the tree weren't cut off on the left.

The colours in this pic are unbelieveble, indeed... I also had problems to understand what is on the background, but great when I understood it.
I agrre with you about the sense of gravity on the body and mine was a provokative message (in particular to In Transit ;D )

Charlie...Beautiful shot! i love the way you set the tree to the left of the frame...it creates a nice balance with the mountain in the background. regards, marie c.

dear antonio, this is a much respected very old tree in a "dead end" valley on the bavarian side of the bavarian/austrian border. the background is the mountain blocking the valley against austria. i deliberately let it fade for improving the prominence of the tree, and probably this becomes not clear in every monitor at this small size and low resolution. as much as i appreciate your comment but i didn't think then and don't think now that the picture would enjoy any improvement by displaying the last branch or twig. anyway, less is always more, and then again, i found it more important to set the tree off centre for a sensible and tension creating composition.
to all: thank you ever so much for your many positive appreciative comments. best regards charlie.f.kohn@sixpence-pictures.com // madrid

I do not understand what are those line in the sky, may be a reconstructed one or a ice-wall of a back big mountain, the light is good but composition lacks of some elements: the big tree is not complete, there is a small tree which is cropped too, these things create confusion in my opinion in what can be a better shot if better calibrated
