About Hello everyone. I have been checking things out here and decided to join. I wanted to introduce myself. I am a children's photographer and also am persuing a project of street shots. This is a recent favorite of mine. Although I shoot digitally, I strive to make my images look more like film. I do miss film, but digital has helped me in my business. I am really trying to grow and learn and love a tough critique. Thanks.

I LOVE THIS SHOT! She looks like she's trying to look through a hole in the fence. You can see her personality really shine through. Nice work! and nice Camera!

I, too, shoot kids. Check out my portfolio if you have a chance. http://www.usefilm.com/image/431813.html

Trish, you have had such an overwhelming response to this photo, you must be so proud to have caught such an image. I love the subject (she is sooo cute!) and the pose is great too. To me she seems a little too closely cropped to the edge, and it makes me feel a little claustrophobic the way she is trying to "fit" in the frame, though this is a sort of silly point since I love the pose itself.... I like the background and feel that this depth of field which includes the BG was a good idea since it does add a nice feeling to the photo.I too have a 10D and love the fact that since the number of shots increases without wasting feel, so too the subjects get more comfortable with the idea of being photographed. To me it has added another dimension to photography altogether.

For a digital shot it looks very close to a good b/w print to me. As my rating shows I think the composition and expression, lighting, choice of a square format (bold) and overall tonality are perfect. A great shot.
Keep it up.

Welcome, Trish! This is a great beginning--beautiful child and delightful pose. I think you captured the "film" effect quite well with your digital camera. There are several here in Usefilm who do the same, and do it extremely well. There are still a few who prefer to use film, and I am one of them. Whatever works for you, right? You may be disappointed if you are looking for tough critiques, though. Oh, and to answer your question about "featured critique" it means that either you wrote a particularly helpful critique about someone else's work, and your photo was featured with the one you critiqued, or vice versa (it works both ways). Nice feature of the site. Sort of an encouragement to write good critiques. {grin} I look forward to seeing more, and have put this one in my "favourites."

Hi Trish - I have stumbled across your site before and you are in my "favorites" ;-)
I have a question - On this particular shot, did you use any filter or enhancement like gausian blur to soften it? I too went digital and LOVE it and am constantly striving for MORE! GREAT expressive shot. I am a "newbie" on usefilm.com too ! - dina marie

only thing i wish were better were if it had more separation between the light background and her light hair. she has cute curly-q pig tails i wish were emphasized more. i have never used the word darling before but the result is darling. i'm ready to see more...

WOW! Thanks again!
Luisa, I replied to your link

Harry, I specifically went to this site because I liked the craggy cement. However you are right about it being a little distracting. I think I needed a more shallow DOF, or or a much sharper one to show the background. I am really into textures, thus her dress. LOVE'em, but I am still learning how to work with them in an effective way. Thanks for your critique.

Mary, you are right about her hair and her dress. Unfortunatly I cropped it in the camera. You really don't want to hear my answer on the 10D question. I hate the focus issues it has and am still learning to over compensate for them. Ask me in 6 months and maybe I'll be a little happier.

Thanks again, so much for the warm welcome. :)
BTW, what is "featrued critique"? on the main page. I'm on it, but can't figure out what it means.

Love the choice of a square, it has become part of the composition like she is looking out of a box, really engages the viewer. I would like to see just a bit more space above her head. The skin tones are amazing, nothing blown out. Sometimes it's hard to fully appreciate images on the web, often the wonderful nuances of a print are missed due to the scan, monitor differences and such. Like so many others have said, this makes me smile and, after all, that is the point of photography, to elicit an emotion. Welcome, you will enjoy this photo community, learn and smile a lot, too.

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17558} 1/9/2004
Welcome Trish!

This is such a nice photograph of your daughter, there are many fine qualities to this image. Her animated expression and body position pull the viewer right into the image in such a nice way. There are a couple of points that might strengthen the image. Notice how there is such a distinct tonal separation between her dark dress and the background on the right side of the image, but on the left side, the top of her head seems to meld into the background. This is probably not as evident in the color image.

Also, in the framing of this image, you cut off the corner of her dress (right side). Was this in the camera or from cropping to make the image square? Unless the background has something you don't want to show, I'd probably include this snippet of her dress.

All that said, I want to reemphasize that this is a terrific image. She must be a delight to photograph!

And, how do you love the 10d for portraits? I am just figuring out how to use it effectively, although I have a LONG way to go.

Very welcome to Usefilm with this very beautiful and cute shot Trish. Wonderful pose and expression on the girl's face. The background seems a bit busy to me and therefore I would like to have seen a bit more even background without the vertical lines. Good lighting and excellent tonal range....Best regards Harry

Wow, Thanks guys. The girl is my daughter, so of course I think she is pretty cute myself, LOL. I like to get a lot of "peeks" from my subjects. I am pretty good at convincing them that Elmo is inside the lens or even better, that there is a fairy underneath the camera.

Tim, the angle lines that you are speaking of is an example of many things that I just don't SEE. Thanks for pointing it out I am still learning all of the details that make one's work much better.

Pat, right back at ya, sister! :)

Thanks again!!!
Trish

I'm a grumpy young man and this photo made me smile! Great how the girl seems to be activley entering the picture/camera by bending down. maybe gives the shot more depth by including the photoghrapher? I dunno bout my interpretation... love the picture!

Trish, welcome to Usefilm :-)

In the about, you suggest that you love a tough critique. I'll keep that in mind. However, I can't say more about this one other than that I absolutely love it. Composition is great, and your choice on the square format gives it that something extra. Beautiful model, and that always helps! All in all, a very nice photo.

Keep posting :-)
