About Slower shutter to catch some movement in the waves. Once in a while the backwash would hit the incoming waves causing them to jump up as they broke. Had to wait a while to catch this one.

Number 6 in the "Watercolor" series.

Another incredible shot in your series. To make a photo look better than seeing it in person, is truly incredible to me.

Great capture Robert with great colours and composition. This speed caught the wave to perfection keeping the movement with just the right amount of softening.
Regards,
Graham.

What a moving image! I love the colors in the wave...all shades of blue and green. A beautiful capture!

Absolutly beautiful. I just love the colors of the water in the wave. The foreground water is also wonderful with the soft look. This has the best of both worlds. Sharp wave and soft foreground. Great work. Don.

Great catch! Must have taken some patience. The only reason I lowered the composition score was I would have loved to have seen the top wave splashes. Minor fault, though.

Hi Robert. Great image here. I love the color and overall feel I get from it. I don't have Photoshop, but I sure like what the "smart blur" effect does.
Rob.

Kat, thank you for the thoughts. As for the smart blur and it's purpose here, my intentions are to create a series that could be used for a local calendar or something similar. The watercolor effect is to give the series a distinct and unified look. This area of the coast is very popular for tourists (as one might imagine) and I would like to give it a different look perhaps. Not many people visit the beaches during the pre-dawn hours (surfers & photographers) and I'm hoping that the unusual beauty of that time of day will create a general interest. It's all on the drawing board at this time and I appreciate the comments and critiques, finding them quite useful. As for the original photo(s), they are all kept intact as I only edit copies of the original files.

Great colors, timing and composition. That green against the dark background and foreground is beautifully the center of attention. Smart blur, huh? i'll have to check out the other ones in this series. i admit i never understood what smart blur could do but you've shown it here. i looked at it and thought maybe you applied median noise which has a smoothing effect also. i, hmm, i'm not sure if i like the effect applied as broadly as you have done here. To me, it diminishes the high quality of your original, removing so much detail it's as if you blithely applied a painting filter and called it a day. And i know it wasn't that easy. On the other hand, without the filter this would have been a lovely but rather cliche water scene. So maybe you're right after all. Although, one can take the most cliche of scenes and process an edge into it so i'll opt for the original version with somewhat less smart blurring. But that's a strictly personal feeling and i applaud you for achieving your vision and earning Photo of the Day. Best regards from Costa Rica: kat~

Forgot to mention also that as for the blur, this camera was, as always, on a very sturdy tripod, sitting on solid rock. In the non-smart blurred original the forground details are very sharp and focused. The moving water is all that was blurred from the slow shutter speed.

Jason, it's not "mad jpge compression" but an application of "smart blur" in photoshop. The first post in this series explains it. Perhaps I should mention it on every post since there will be several more in this series.

Jason Harris   {K:392} 1/19/2004
Good Catch. I think it looks like it has had some mad JPEG compression, and is a little blurred (not because of motion, but just because of blur). Other than that, the colors are wonderful and it is a really pivital moment. Nice work.
