I think I know how to describe black and white now. What it does is distill the essence of that moment; whatever and whoever is in it is revealed in their own light. Sometimes it takes a great photograph like this to be able to describe all great photographs.

Great mood here, and that boy looks like pure trouble for his mother! I like the figure in the background. It gives the feeling that while this boy might play hard, he does so under a watchful eye. And his expression would almost seem as though he just heard his name called. Does that make sense? It's early still... :-)

Absolutely brilliant. Saying anything more would do little to add to the sheer light of this image. As good as anything I've seen from the likes of Frank, Brandt or any others you would care to name. Congratulations on a phenomenal piece of work.

I like the deep tones and the lack of catchlights in the eyes. The only distraction is the white shirt on the man in the background.

Even without the title, I can image in what type of environment he's growing up. I like the strong contrast an the overall mood of the picture.

Square image centers the focus on him well. I like that his eyes are turned away from the camera. Conveys a sense of desolation. Did you blur the figure in the background after the fact? It would have been distracting. Great photo.

looks great david you have to have that grainy effect with these shots. I just have a Bill Brandt book infront of me full of this type of work...roger
