Actually,Sarah...this was taken at a small pond not far from my house...and I live in a suberb of Dallas!....hundreds of miles from the coast....there are at least a couple of hundred of these gulls at the pond all the time....I always find that strange.

really good image, i like the way you have cropped in tight making a good graphic composition and resisting the temptation to include the whole of the gull's wings. His eye is pin sharp - which is most important in any portrait (human or feathered!)And finally, the lighting is spot on, the grey sea behing him contrasts perfectly, and i'm guessing it may have been a grey old day as there is no harsh light on the bird at all. Great Shot all in all!!
