I find fascinating the interplay in Mister Caldwell's work between life and art. The vision in this, like many of his photographs, is clearly influenced by certain styles of certain photographers in the 1910s, 1920s, and 1930s--and yet the subject, which perhaps those artists taught him to see more intensely, in turn inspires variations which make the work as fresh as those of his inspirations.
