Meg...Ever hear of Marc Hauser? Chicago portrait shooter... very famous and very simple. Go to his site. Marc said the exact words you said concerning looking in the shot for anything you don't want in there... and he does everything HE wants to and your comments about Seniors being overbearing is absolutely correct. They search me out because they have seen my work. Then, they get to the shoot and want something they could have gone to Sears or Walmart to get. I give 'em what they want and then shoot something cool and off-center. They go right to the Sears shots and buy those. Not every single one does this, but often if they do I work up a cool shot, and mount/frame it and show it to them and they start drooling! Then, I sock-it-too-'em! Can't let those Sears-types get out there with our name on them! Regards, Rik

Thank you Rik. Simplicity IS key in portraits. After trying to please clients for so many years who try to put everything but the kitchen sink in a shot, I'm averse to anything extraneously added. In fact as I'm shooting, I keep looking to see what more I can take away--even down to the lights and highlights and reflections. I always try to remind myself that Richard Avedon only used one camera and one light throughout his career. I'm just starting to shoot some seniors and I've found they can be a lot like an overbearing client. But I am at a point in my life where I can say "this is what I do...this is the way I see it" and if they don't like it they can go elsewhere. Thanks again and good luck to you and your daughter...sounds like you guys have some healthy competition going on. You'll both be better for it!
Meg

Megan...Stunning simplicity! This is what it's all about, in my opinion. Keep it simple, display your ideas with light, pose, expression and not a lot of "fu-fu!" This image has all the good qualities. Regards, Rik PS I love the simple, yet elegant signiture style.

Wonderful shot and great overall composition. Really enjoy what you have done here. A great self portrait in a time of "deep thought". I would also like to thank you for your recent comments. I am getting ready for an exibition in Mongolia next July, and your opinions are appreciated so so much. Would like to hear more if possible somehow. Thanks.
