TOM! this is a wonderful image. definitely my favorite that i've seen of your work. it's got a great futuristic mood. ever read cat's cradle? looks like ice 9 has been released here...
the composition is great, the colors also. really a top notch work all around. bravo!

Hi Tom, I have used Neatimage for a while now and find it does a good job. The earlier versions were a bit slow but now with the version 4 upgrade the speed and processing is much improved.I like that it works on 16 bit images as I shot mostly in RAW. I think that a lot of digital images are too sharp and now I ad a layer and a small blur. I then change the blend mode to soft light and take the opacity way down. I find this takes off the 'digital edge' and gives a better result ffor images posted on the web.
I use the Healing Brush to remove dust marks etc instead of the Clone Tool. The results are more subtle.

hi john, thank you for the excellent comment. i agree with the spots (i've been meaning to clean my CCD but i'm just working up the courage ;^)). sounds like this guy deserves a bit more attention. one question though, i used the despeckle filter twice on this to remove noise. i didn't want to give it that PS sheen you see on a few photo's so i stopped there. is there are better way or an additional filter/effect i can use to achieve this without making the result look too "fake"? any advise would be greatly appreciated.

BTW - does anyone know if the "excellent" link works yet? i've recently found occasion to use it a few times. i'm just not sure what it does just yet.

Hugo, no worries. i played prior to reading the next comment (john's). to be honest i thought you cropped it to lose that bit of schmutz below the anemometer. i thought it was a crop because i noticed the little cloud just above the right side mountains was missing. then i saw change number 2 and i was a bit confused because you had obviously moved the anemometer up and it was covering the cloud. i was also wondering how you had cropped it and managed to keep the frame intact ;^)
very nice! i like yours a lot. definitely cleans it up a bit and brings out the instrument. i tried shooting this from a kneeling position but it was distorting the horizon. even though i love wide angle distortions it didn't look right here. maybe taking a few steps back would've done the trick. btw, didn't know you were such a PS weenie! great work!

Hi John, I did not crop the image, only moved the windex a bit up, and placed in the sky....;o) I cloned out the other parts on the right side.
You've got a point with the noise, though.

A stunner. I agree with Hugo re the crop off the right hand side. The strong horizon lne of the salt pan mirrored in the horizontal apparatus is very appealing. The colours are perfect but I think less noise in the sky and a tidy up of the dust spots would make this a 10+. Impressive work, regards John

What do I think? Top Notch, Tom!
This one has it all, but in terms of our recent discussion, the Tension is there, with a captital T. Very similar to the "racetrack stone" shot, but this time increased by the contrast between a human made "techie" thing (weatherstation) and the vastness of the salt plains / lakebed. Beautifully exposed, with fantastic patterns in the salt.
Only one small suggestion, see attachments, as one image tells more than a thousand words....;o) No worries, words will follow.
(Spot the differences, there are 2 of them....;) The purpose is to make the lightmeter stand out a bit stronger, and although this is what I consider messing with reality, again, a lower camera position would've probably resulted in a similar effect.
Outstanding job, i'm very, *VERY* impressed.... Amaising view.

Looks very well saturated in the blues - which worls here.
The exposure is good - there is just enough detail in the white to give it texture, and you get those lovely blues f the sky.

a perfect linearity in the execution of this photo the contrast of the sky with the subject white men is much right one!
one constructive choice a lot very studied. those created "empty" sky spaces are much good also.
