Yes Amana! This a superb shot and great details of the moon. I can not see the glow that I had in my shot so let me ask you did you use a flash here? Cheers for this wonderful result.

Amna,
Nice first try. Dust off that tripod, use a cable release, and try shooting some of the other phases as well. There is more shadow detail to aid in focusing closer to the quarter phases.

Good Morning Saeed, Thank you for the information, am glad that I got many outputs to improve my moon ;-), I will try all the suggestions and I will search for my tripod as every one recommend it. Next time inshallah I will take my time when capture the moon and I will try all the settings you and other photographers suggested. You got nice pics of the moon too, keep trying with your digital camera.
P.S Did you notice that many people start asking of we are relatives, when I read Tom comment I wondered what if we are really relative but we do not know about it ;-)

P.S it is a just coincidence that me and Saeed have the same family name, no relation, we are from the same city though.Al Shamsi is very big tribe, am glad that they have photographers among them ;-)

last night the moon was amazing..! we were on the way back home and it felt like it stepped out of a fairytale..!
did you use a tripod.. it looks a bit blurry.. my trials the other day had similar outputs.. i tried balancing my cam on the roof's wall..! i think if you tried a 1/50 shutter with camera support it'll turn out great, no shake and perfect exposure..! :)

nice one.. like the colors.. agree with most about the tripod.. especially if you are using a 300mm zoom and at night.. In fact, it is good to use a tripod anytime you use the zoom (even in daytime). Ok, so I don't practice what I preach :) but, if you have a tripod available.. and time.. you will be amazed by the photo. I wonder how long you had the shutter open for... the key is not to overexpose the moon, seems like your shutter was the right speed.. just too much shake. good work

The moon isn't moving so fast relative to your camera. Therefore, it's always a good idea to bracket your exposure. For full moon shot, in addition to 1/250 and 1/500 at f/16, you could give a little less exposure by making a photo at 1/1000 at f/16, and a little more by shooting at 1/125 at f/16. You can achieve the same bracket of exposure by keeping your shutter speed at 1/250 but using different aperture openings, such as one exposure each at f/16, f/22, f/11 and f/8. You need to turning off your auto exposure and setting your exposure manually when you photograph the moon. The main reason is that when you point your camera at the full moon, the moon is a little bright spot in a sea of darkness. Your automatic metering will give too much emphasis to the dark sky and therefore request for too much exposure with the result that the moon will be overexposed. Another reason to exposure manually and to bracket your exposure is that the exact amount of light coming from the moon will depend in part on how clear the sky is when you make your photograph. High humidity, dust in the air if it is windy. More exposure needed at sea level or low altitude like UAE. These factors will require small exposure changes. Finally the best you bracket your exposure, means that you make a photo at the setting you think is correct, but you also shoot the same subject several times, making slight changes in either the shutter or aperture TRIPOD AND RELEASE CABLE MUST. Attached two image one of evening (day) moon and the eclipse( not that good). I hope it is useful info. Saeed

amna, lovely moon! she's fickle though and hard to capture. i have found that a tripod is absolutely necessary to capture the moon and retain good detail. mostly because you want to get as much dof as you can possibly get away with. somewhere in the f/11 range is good. at f/11 choose a shutter speed that will overexpose by 1/2 or a full stop. i've tried doing it at f/22 but that requires much longer exposures. not a problem per-se but the moon insists on moving ;^)
also, digitally zooming in (in PS) exacerbates the softness of focus and any motion introduced during the exposure. be it camera motion or the moon itself. so, the best way to get a nice "big" moon is to use the longest glass you can get a hold of. your 300mm lens with a 2x converter should do just fine. i've used my 400mm lens but find it's still not big enough. gotta get me one of those 2x converters ;^)
take care, tom
PS - any relation to saeed? or is it just coincidence?

Hi Saeed, The camera was handheld, I took the shot from my room's window. I have tripod but did not use it here (honestly since I got my canon I didnot use it). I was aiming for better shot as the moon was half covered by clouds but did not last for too long. My camera sitting was in auto, apertur 5.6 and shutter speed 1/60. I have a few shots only cuz it bothers my parents to take outdoors shots at nights!

Now a days the moon so big, but to me not promising much ,I had some shot before but the result is not good, I think especially with digital camera the best to shot is in winter, 'cos the atmosphere is perfect, or early evening time, your image is great but seems a slight shake ,,not sure did you use tripod and cable release, those of great help to prevent movement, if you mentioned the ,shutter and aperture, may can help more ,keep shooting till you get the result you want, Saeed

Great first try. Remember the moon will fool the camera's meter just like shooting in snow or beach settings. I've found a little over exposure will solve the problem. Last but not least always use a tripod and cable release.
