Leavenworth's Eryngo
Eryngium leavenworthii
Description: Leavenworth's eryngo is a prickly, 20-40 in. annual with a leafy stem, broadly branched in the upper portion. Almost the entire plant has some shade of purple. Flowers are minute, purple, and mingled with small, spiny bracts in an elongated, terminal, head-like cluster. These are subtended by conspicuous spiny-tipped bracts. The leaves are deeply lobed, each segment edged and tipped with stiff spines.
Native Distribution: Throughout Texas, except Rio Grande Plains & the Trans-Pecos, n. to s.w. Arkansas & Kansas

Thanks for the wonderful comments and identity of this plant. Just the other day I aquired a dried version of these along with some other dried flowers that I am planning to set up for a shoot.

Hello, Peter -
This is a great image - you show the color and the spines of one of my favorite plants (Eryngo, Eryngium leavenworthii) from an unusual perspective. They are not actually a thistle, but surprisingly a member of the parsley/carrot family. I have some growing behind my house, but despite numerous attempts, I haven't yet taken a photo of them that I'm happy with.
