About Still sifting through my slides from Hawaii. Found this among the stuff I just got back from dr5. Not excellent by any means but I found it interesting. Shot with a #25 red filter, processed dr5 dev1.

leanne, there are 2 photos in my portfolio here from the eddie: 'it's a long way down' and 'big water'. the 'big water' photo is bruce irons on his winning wave. the photo 'relaxed' is from pipeline during that same trip.

i may be heading over next month for the banzai betty women's pipe contest. still working out the details on that one.

i was at both. hopefully some of my pipemasters photos will be in the april issue of surfer. there was a deadline mixup on the march issue so none of my eddie photos made it.

robert, thank you.

to be honest, you can't be out at someplace like pipeline (where this photo was taken) and not 'be the wave'. you would be chewed up and spat out. there is a power in the water that you don't feel many other places.

when you started with dismayed, i got a little worried. ;) thank you for your appreciation.

Very interesting image Sean. It's almost as though the surfer and the water were one entity, which I suppose in some sense they must be for a surfer to not only survive but thrive in this environment. Please forgive the pop-psychology, 'be the wave' type reference, but I suspect you understand the feeling I'm talking about. Anyway, very nice image.

By the way, I am pretty dismayed by your portfolio. You have some really good stuff here, and in my opinion your views and comments are way too low for the quality of work. I guess we shouldn't expect most people to 'get it' when it comes to certain types of images or a particular sports culture. If everyone did 'get it' then the 'it' wouldn't be anything special, but I still think your images deserve more attention. Just my rant for the day.

Hi Sean,
indeed I agree it's better not too surf if you shoot, at least you don't have a conflict in your mind! I believe it's a very hard job (I can guess how many times you've been risking of being hit by a surfer on its way) and bodysurfing helps a lot! You should come to Italy for some cool water shots!
Ciao
Maurizio

maurizio, i body surf as it keeps me in shape better for the water shooting but i'm definitely not a hard core surfer. works to my advantage in some ways as i don't have to debate whether to surf or shoot. i just shoot.

water shooting is definitely not for everyone. you need a cool head and a very high comfort level in the water. lots of things going on around you all at once.

i know the malloys from a distance. hoping this year i can get into their moonshine art festival.

Sean, do you surf also?

I believe shooting from water must not be that easy....

Do you know the Malloys?

Joker just appearing and with speed shakes is all the action one needs in a shot surely. Excellent moment And the wave looking dangerous from that angle.

jim, thank you. yes i was in the water. i much prefer shooting from there than from the beach. unfortunately, this photo was from my only water session while i was in hawaii. the surf was much to big the rest of the time, 20-25', sometimes bigger. the day this photo was taken it was around 12'.
