Thanks Richard. They were fairly stationary, but there were several who were bellowing at me quite loudly, and if you can imagine it was quite a racket they put up during the shoot...lol. Antonia

Portrait photography is all about capturing mood, and personality with light isn't it? You have certainly done this here Antonia. The conversion to sepia really works too, allowing the viewer to better see the textures. As models go these ones were probably very easy to work with, but perhaps did not smell quite as good as your usual ones.

Lovely toning and great to have two of the cows looking straight at you.
Not sure about the calf on the right of picture though ... I think it was a little nervous having its photo taken lol

I love the stare and the puff of breath coming from the main cow on the right.... it focuses my eye and lets me know where I should start looking.
The sepia toning is a nice touch as well... love the varying tones of the cow fur!

Hi Toni,
I think what you say about the way that the usefilm staff picks the critique awards is true. They don't really follow their own rules. I have been a featured critic twice so far. Both times I didn't think my critique was anything special. But, it was nice to have my photos featured in rotation for a day.

I'm lost. I thought that you converted to 16 bit once the image is imported. You shoot 16bit to begin with? Maybe I should read my manual (I hate doing that...lol). Now as for the "breath," you and David have to quit agreeing with each other so much, and I say this with the greatest fondnest for you both. I know what's on the left is likely "breath," it just is more humorous to think of it as coming from the other end, and it helps the theme work out better, no? (Hey, it's the kid in me.)

Great capture ! Coming late to the show, I can enjoy the nice discussion here ;-) And as a country bumpkin, I can support David`s point, it`s mainly breath we see, albeit I?m aware of the other details...
16 bit, hmm. Your D100 supports it, but your Casio surely not. I t doesn`make much sense to create and work out a 16 bit TIF from 8 bit RAW. But this image does not depend on hightech features, IMO

Thanks Arwa, actually, I read that when I joined and when I received my first award which was for someone's critique. Perhaps it is a combination of the two though, since it seems to me that in general exceptional images go along with the critiques -- it doesn't bother me that those get the award rather than the critique. I don't know how else they could do it. Whatever the case, I enjoy the feature and have had lots of fun when my critiques go up even though the award doesn't go to me. Antonia

My thinking is that a particularly interesting piece gets picked and one of the critiques to go with it. The pics are often more outstanding than the critiques. As you can see, my critique wasn't anything that special at all (I wouldn't consider it a good critique at all), but Dina's picture definitely is an excellent image. The only picture of mine that has won an award for a critique is one of my better ones, and it seems to hold true for other winners as well.

Yes, I see what you mean about the award.. It is kind of strange the way they do that though, isn't it? In theory, someone could write a really excellent negative critique for a poor or mediocre photo and the photo still gets credit for an award. I fail to see the reasoning in that. I think that's why I kind of automatically gave you credit. It makes more sense that way. I have been on both ends of this system as well. I was surprised to learn that I had an award based on someone elses critique.

Toni, this thumbnail just leapt off my screen, begging to be openned!! It is soo good. You could not have posed them any better, their faces just get me!! The main subject is obviously a country boy, with that piece of straw dangling from his mouth...the breath...the tones...the whole thing is just excellent! I LOVE IT!!

those are very good tones. Really. The light creates a great atmosphere (the way you can see their breath).
