About The "flower" of a grass plant.

The cerrado is full of weird and wonderful flowers. This seems to be the flower for a type of grass. It has two very long "spikes" of about 15-20cm and the shape of a star. I don't know the name of this plant.

In PS I have tried to separate the flower from the rest of the surrounding grassland and calcarious/sandy soil. I have used several selections and adjustment layers to desaturate and adjust the background without losing detail in the flower itself.

I know it's not the sharpest or most technically accomplished photo ever, so I am looking forward to some criticism and sugestions.

Hi Angelo, I definitely need to get beyond the real rudamentary stuff in PS. I think I could have some fun with the effect you've used. What I need now is some help on getting my photos to the correct file size and pixel dimensions. I've just spent 1 1/2 hours trying to get my 400x400 pixel image below 340ks Help! How do I do this.

Dawn
P.S. The subject matter of your shot is spectacular. I'm a great fan of asymmetry. The blurred background in the second sample, I think is better than the first, but only marginally.

Clearly, you won't get one-line comments from this girl.

Calma, amigo... é um hobby... é pra relaxar...

RELAXA, PORRA! :)

I am not very familiar with PS techniques. I'm just learning. So, I just go on what looks good to me. I like the way the flower is fills the frame and is pointing to each direction. NIce job.

Danny,

The world already takes too much cr@p from Bush and Blair, it doesn't need beating with flower photos :)

I just wish I could make a living out of photographing nature all over the world... just a dream... gotta be better than IT support...

Yes thats better. Much more subtle.Thats what I used on my Railway engine wheel. Actually when I first saw the image I thought it was grasses blowing in the wind. I don't honestly think this one is ever going to be a world beater but then that probably was not the object of the excercise.
Regards
Danny

I see what you mean, Danny.

I did try blurring the background in several different ways, but none of them really works for me. Neither does darkening it --- it is too obvious and looks unnatural.

What do you think of this radial blur? It kinda gives me a headache, but it does make it more "pictorial" --- or does it?

pictorial or a headache?

Brilliant close up shot you have managed to present here with wonderful DOF. Cheers Angelo.

If it is a natural history shot I think itis excellent but I think there is too much background for a pictoral shot.

Olá Angelo,
ví que não se acha um especialista em PS.
Prá mim está excelente.
O fundo acompanha as linhas da flor e, sim, ela está muito bem definida.
Bela e impecável.
Um abraço,
Marília

Hi Arwa. Thank you for your comment. I am flattered. I'm very limited in my PhotoShop skills and usually I only like to adjust the basic levels and contrast.

Yes, you are right, there was some USM applied, but only after the image had been totally flatenned and resized to its final dimensions.

charming macro!
I love the colors! they are so unique as if you pulled out the green from this image! your photoshoping is effective, but it seems as if there was have unsharpening mask used on the flower itself?
The composition shows off the beautiful nature of this flora and support your about! Its just like a star
