Nice. Great composition, and a great background. It's a little soft, but still a fine image.

well .. a tripod is a necessary evil!
even though we don't like to use it, it can make the whole difference between good and bad.

using a tripod might not be a problem when shooting lanscapes, as no tree will move even an inch or fly away while your setting up your tripod, however, it's a real evil when it comes to wildlife, bugs or any other moving subjects!

personally, i rarely use it and that's why i'm considering a telelens with an image stabilizer!
even though a tripod is the best choice.

regards,
ned

I'm not real crazy about bug photos but this one really stands out.
The softness and color are beautiful, a perfectly 'poised' dragonfly

Great catch Arwa - look at the clarity of those wings! Great freeze action here - he's RED. :) I never get to see them this close so I don't think I've seen a red one yet. :)

Hello thilo! Thank you for the comment my friend! I do have some with lower aperture but the background was too distracting, maybe I should use a tripod next time since they don?t move a lot
And maybe I could barrow a ring flash from my friend!
thanx :)

Hi Arwa,

very cool stuff. love that colors and DOF. you may think about adding some sharpness... my guess is that's the only thing missing to get this good picture to a perfect picture.

Best wishes,

Thilo

beautiful work... nicely composed with great colors... love the dof...although it is a great image, it is just a tiny bit out of focus.. if it was a little sharper, this would definitely be an award winner or at least should be.......

Oh no cessy! nothing good?why???
Did you se macro lens and a low aperture number?
Ned ali sent me a very helpful e mail when I started photographing dragonflies
Heres some of what he wrote!

"Before I shoot I have 4 things in mind:

1- Aperture: of course the larger the aperture opening the more light can reach the film or sensor, and as a result the higher the shutter speed you can have. Moreover, there's a creative feature of the aperture; it controls the DOF.

2- Shutter Speed: as a rule of thumb, you shouldn't go for a shutter speed lower than the focal length of the lens you're using. However, this depends on your ability to handheld the camera.

Knowing my abilities, I don't go shoot at shutter speeds below 1/100 sec. especially at tele-focal lengths (i.e. 150mm and above) and when doing macro. In both cases a slight camera shake will have a big impact on the sharpness.

3- ISO Speed: the higher the ISO speed the higher the shutter speed you can achieve. However, keep in mind that the higher the ISO the higher the noise level, especially at in low light level situations.

4- Focal length: the focal length is a creative feature in a lens. Wide angle lenses are not normally used for portraits but it's generally great for landscapes!

In micro photography, the longer the focal length the more the working distance you have. Working Distance is the distance between the camera and the object to be photographed.

It might not be important when shooting flowers, however, working distance is critical when it comes to shooting insects as they might fear human approach, and before you click they're gone!!

It's worth reminding that the longer the focal length, the higher shutter speed should be used."

Shooting in progress:

Keeping the 4 points above in mind:

1- I set the camera to AV (Aperture Value Priority) and choose an aperture that suits my object.

2- I compose and keep an eye on the camera suggested shutter speed. If it is low, I raise the ISO to reach a reasonable shutter speed. I don't usually go above ISO 400 as the noise will be horrible! I hate noise!!

3- I usually set the camera to continuous shooting. when I feel comfortable with the composition, aperture and shutter speed, I take a deep breath, focus and then depress the shutter release button to take 2 to 4 pictures of my subject. You might wonder WHY!! The clicking action results in camera shake .. it might be slight shake but it will shake! Therefore, when shooting in continuous mode, the first shot will suffer from the click effect but the shots after should be ok. Check the pictures, keep the best and delete the others so you free some space on the memory card for another shooting session. If you're not taking anymore shots it might be a good idea to keep all the pictures you've shot and check them later on the computer screen. Then you can best decide on what to keep and what to delete.
