This is beautiful Chris! You have done a great job with this photo as usual! Flawless composition with beautiful colors and nice light! The butterfly is so pretty!!! Haven't seen one of these in person ! I like the canvas effect as well! Doesn't look noisy to Me! In fact VERY 'quiet'! Take care and GOD bless!........John 7 !

Thanks for the patient explanation, Chris. I can see how, if you are at heart a painter, the ability to produce photographs that look like paintings could be very satisfying. I was a bit puzzled about the sandstone filter, because I knew there were canvas filters if you wanted to create the look of canvas, and similarly for linen, etc. (I think I've even read about Van Gogh filters and Pointilliste--or Seurat--filters for those who want to give a specific KIND of painterly look to their photographs. Couldn't see where sandstone fitted it. But if it looks good at high res. on your MAC screen, good for you! I bet it looks wonderful! To go off at a bit of a tangent, I must say I don't understand what Merete did to it, or why so many people find it attractive (although I respect her skills tremendously and have seen some beautiful images in her portfolio). I feel sad when I think that whole realms of things that others find beautiful don't waken up a response in my heart. But it will all come right in heaven, I'm sure, where all the beauty we have ever seen and experienced will be swallowed up in praise and joy.

Hi Roger,
I guess the most basic answer is personal taste! In other words, I like this look. maybe I'm a frustrated painter who sees the opportunities Photoshop presents to make a photo look a little like a painting and grabs them with both hands!
The fact is, you take photo's of things that I wouldn't snap in a million years! That's taste ~ or, if you prefer, a commitment to a certain kind of photography. I have a commitment to another kind that I'm equally passionate about.
I've so far produced 4 'worked on' images of this same butterfly and this is the only one I've turned into a 'painting'. But, for a variety of reasons, it's the one I like best. i like the 'feel' of it ~ the light, the detail, the vibrant colours, the crop ~ everything!
And, yes, I even like what you call the 'graininess' of it because, on my Mac monitor it looks more like a sandstone texture than 'noise' ~ and a sandstone texture gives a textured look to the 'canvas' the 'painting' is sitting on!
I knew full well I would get the odd comment about the 'noise', which is why I made light of it in my 'about'. But it doesn't bother me, because I've got the full-size, hi-res version sitting on my iMac and it looks great.
So, there it is. God made us all different! You like one thing and I like another, but that doesn't stop me appreciating the technical skill that allows other kinds of photographer, (such as yourself), to produce their own unique brand of work. I might not want to emulate it, but I can admire their expertise in making it.
Best regards, as ever,
Chris

Two questions, Chris. (1) Why would you (anyone?) want a photograph to look painterly? and (2) Why would a sandstone texturing filter enhance this look? I'm not digging at you, I am genuinely puzzled. It just looks like a rather grainy photo to me... (A very NICE grainy photo, of course, with a butterlfy I would LOVE to take in any way shape or form.)

Great shot and I love Merete's 'ruined' version even better as a painting that is.... ;-D!!! In this case... you've got two choices: one is leave it as it is/was, but crop it a bit tighter so you loose the bonus bee and the whole attention goes to the beautiful buttie... or second... go the Merete way and aquarel it even more.... hard choice, but I'd go for door number one.... ;-D!!! As for comment on this shot: lovely colors, great detail and composition... well done!!! BTW love the light comming for the side.... ;-D!! (And it sure looks like your nickname is 'sticking' Mr. Blue Sky... haha..).

This is a beautiful shot Chris. Such wonderfully clear detail and colours! Must admit though to thinking that it would be better without the 'noise' as it seems to me the flowers in the foreground and the butterfly are so sharp that it doesn't sit right with the textured background.
I think the composition is great though and just love the colours (oops said that already!)
Cracking shot Mr Blue Skies....
