Oh how this reminds me of my childhood in New Zealand... These grow wild (or something like them) as large trees on the coast and flower in Decemeber, earning themselves the nickname of the 'New Zealand Christmas tree'. In the local lingo they're called Pohutakawa (pronounced Poe hoo tar car wah) and are simply amazing when in flower....
