About The first few shots with my D100, taken last sunday at a field hockey match. Hockey is a fast moving game, and I enjoyed toying with the 135-400 mm lens and the camera.

Part I: The foul

Exact settings: 1/1000' @ f5.6, 200 ASA, -0,5 EV Zoom 200 mm. I cropped the photo slightly.

Your comments, as always, are appreciated!

Cheers,

Hugo

Exact angle and timing. Great catch for we feel the action and... almost the pain. Ouch !
Colours and sharpness are well defined, I would say it's almost a tribute to the lens too.

se l'hockey su prato è come l'hockey su ghiaccio allora la tua foto ne rende la giusta misura.è uno sport molto duro.delle tre sequenze è quella che mi piace di più.bello scatto.

Ouch..!! So, when you don't chop heads, your models do instead! ;-)

No, just joking, this is relly super! What a fantastic timing! Very good!

I really enjoyed your field hockey photos even if I'm not very sport interested! I haven't heard of field hockey before either, but it's very common here in Sweden with ice hockey and also indoor hockey.

Groeten Tim.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I played Left back when I was 14 thru 16, then the team's concept changed and I played sweeper at 17 & 18.

This is THE Gentleman's sport.

In the rules, the man with the ball is not allowed to back up with the ball against the defending player - one must go face to face to challenge, as it were, unlike in football or basketball.

Ahhhhh the memories...... thanks Hugo, once again!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Tom, THanks for your comment. I find the shutter lag neglectable, even stronger, I haven't noticed anything unusual, not even compared to the F100. Bloody fast, I'd say. Spa GP? Next Year? Hmmmm! Mind if I join you?

Cheers,

Hugo

it's a beauty, hugo. there is nothing i can say or comment on. the output does seem a bit familiar ;^) i do have a question for you: did you find the shutter lag to be problematic? i keep hearing the D100 has a horrible shutter lag but i haven't had the chance to shoot much action which required precision. i am planning a holiday to the spa gp next year and was planning on attempting some shots. do you think the lag is too much for f1 cars?

take care,
tom

Great shot Hugo, You just captured the motion in just a perfect way... If someone should have doubts of what was happening in the field, this picture could be used to clarify things...

Cheers,

Maria

You froze the action, Hugo, and achieved a good composition, too. I have a couple Sigma lenses to use on my D100 and I like them a lot. Enjoy your D100!

Good and a very original subject my friend. This sport is not common for me! Not at all! (at Greece we ...don't play it! xexexe) Fantastic moment of fight for the tiny ball.
Best regards!

Hugo, you brought new subject which is seldom here I have a lot but I thought I'll wait 'cos no body was interesting in sport shot or few, this one is excellent motion image and correct moment too, the lovely light shadow is an extra effect, nice shot ,even I go for the blur background more for artistic and show image, well done Saeed

Hugo de Wolf Hugo de Wolf   {K:185110} 5/21/2004
Hi Ian, I did try to take a few with a slower shutter, but taking photos hand-held @ 400 mm of a fast moving game and trying to only capture the motion blur of the players instead of that of the camera movement is beyond my skills...;o)

I found it difficult enough to follow the game trough a lens, and not missing the action. The shots I took at a slower shutter speed did not show the desired result.

Thanks for your comment,

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Hugo, now i'm really jealous :( A D100 !!!!!
I've been thinking long and hard about a D70, can't afford it at the moment :(
To your photo - this is something new for me, a photo with movement and people in it from you! :-)
It works really well and i'm sure you will love working woth your D100. A very good moment captured! Looking forward to the rest of the series. I suppose you think we don't have enough flat land here to have a hockey match :)
Just joking. Take care, your friend - Neil

I like the high perspective which clears up the background really well. I can't help thinking that a slower shutter speed would have added more dynamism to the shot.

Great action shot though.

Groet Teunis
