  Q. Is there such thing as a "prop light"

Asked by Brian Griffiths    (K=255) on 5/16/2007
A few years ago I was getting an informal lesson on lighting from a casual friend who had attended a lighting seminar, and he used the term "prop light" to refer to "modeling lights". So I ran across "modeling light" again as a term and decided I wanted to see if "prop light" was the same thing, and wouldn't you know, I am having the devil of a time finding anything anywhere on the web. So the question, what is a "prop light" then? Thanks for your time!

Never heard of a prop light. A modeling light is the small lower wattage light that stays on in a strobe to allow you to position the light and see the effect. It is of low enough brilliance in comparison to the strobe light that it pretty much has no effect on the exposure unless you use long exposure times.

Thanks, Phil. I had the feeling that the definition I got was wrong. Thanks so much.
