Stick with the major brands (HP, Dell, Lenovo, and maybe a few others like Apple, Sony, and Acer) and you should be fine.

My 1 year old Toshiba has been giving me trouble. It has already had the hard drive replaced and it looks like it needs another one. Now it keeps shutting down unexpectedly again--very frustrating. The ame thing happens to my daughter's new Toshiba laptop. I really don't know if it it the Toshiba laptop itself or the Vista operating system. Toshiba is usually a good brand for items.

You should give consideration to the Dell XPS M1530. The base unit would suit your needs and retails at $1000 (US).
I can personally recommend this unit for performance and reliability.

My wife had similar problems with her Toshiba laptop, it would shut down without warning. It also needed a new hard drive after 18 months use. A little research led me to understand that they are notoriously prone to overheating. She had the dust vacuumed off the fans, and also invested in one of those heat sink bases for laptops and it's worked OK since. Fingers crossed. In contrast I bought an Acer 7200i at the same time (3 years ago)and I've had no trouble at all.

I have just bought the MacBook while still on my holiday in Thailand, the Mac will serve more for your photography and you will noticed a great different in the graphic quality of work on this machine.
Wishing you all of the best

Apple Macbook Pro 17 inch - under $3,000 US$ (Best Buy has a 24 month , no interest on in store purchases offer so that's a little more than $100 per month. Mac is light years ahead of PC's, ask ANY Pro Photographer). IF YOU MUST, you can go for the 15.4 inch screen which will cost about $2,000........ Once you go Mac, you never go back - took me years to get it but I would NEVER EVER switch back to PC's, there's no comparison...... Rashed is absolutely correct about Graphic Quality.... Spend the extra cash - do it right...
